  1. CD Projekt RED has pulled the covers off of Geralt of Rivia's next outing in the world of The Witcher 3. Titled Hearts of Stone, the massive expansion pits Geralt against Olgierd von Everec, an immortal turned butcherous bandit captain. The expansion adds new monsters and a bevy of tasks that range from heroic to strange. Hearts of Stone will also feature a new cast of characters and along with a new cast will be additional romance options. The developers have even added a new mechanic to the game in the form of Runewords that will each affect the combat system in bold and exciting new ways. More details have yet to be revealed regarding this new system. CD Projekt promises over ten hours of additional content will be in Hearts of Stone. For those that bought the season pass for The Witcher 3, Hearts of Stone will be free, while those who held off on the pass will be looking at about $19.99. A limited boxed release of the expansion will hit retailers, too. This version includes the download code for Hearts of Stone, two decks of real-life gwent decks, and a manual explaining the rules of gwent. Those who ordered the season pass can purchase the gwent decks and manual for themselves through a special initiative set up by CD Projekt. Hearts of Stone will release for all platforms on October 13.

  3. Ciri, a woman burdened under the weight of ancient blood and prophecy, joins Geralt as a playable character in The Witcher 3. CD Projekt RED decided that adding another playable character would provide new narrative opportunities that players would be able to enjoy. Ciri is the last of a lost Elven lineage and wields considerable power, a power which has drawn the wrath of the Wild Hunt and the Kingdom of Nilfgaard. The CD Projekt stresses that her inclusion as a playable character isn't the a shift in focus from Geralt. "[Ciri] is not playable in the same way as Geralt -- the game is still about him, his story," they clarified. The team also has this to say about Ciri: The announcement comes alongside the release of several new screenshots that can be seen here. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is currently set for release on May 19. View full article

  5. The development team decided to push back the release of The Wither 3: Wild Hunt one more time in order to iron out some of the finer details. Though it was originally slated for release this month, The Witcher 3 was delayed into early 2015 back in March. Now fans will have to wait until May 19th, 2015 for the release of Wild Hunt. The board of CD Projekt issued an apology to their supporters: While the news is surely a disappointment, at least CD Projekt has the good grace to apologize, right?

  7. CD Projeckt RED, the developer behind The Witcher series and Good Old Games, is kicking off E3 with an early press conference, which you can watch right here. The livestream begins at 11am Pacific (2pm Eastern). They're teasing more about The Witcher 3, a new trailer/in-game footage, and a big announcement for GOG.com. Maybe we'll hear something about Cyberpunk 2077? You can watch the livestream of the press conference on thewitcher.com/stream, GOG.com/stream, or right here in the player below. UPDATE: The press conference is over. There were a number of bombshells dropped, so let's cover them for those of you who didn't have a chance to watch live. - The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will release February 24th, 2015 - The boxed versions of the game will contain a map, soundtrack, the official "Witcher Universe - The Compendium," stickers, and a protective sleeve - Collector's Editions will come with all of the goodies of the boxed game along with a 200 page art book, a Witcher medallion, a SteelBook box, inner and outer containment boxes, and an awesome 33x24x26cm, hand-painted, Polystoone statue of Geralt of Rivia slaying a griffin (there is a neat little marketing/making of video, as well) - Additionally, pre-orders will come with two priority beta keys for The Witcher Adventure Game, a digital board game for PC, Andorid, and iOS that will have both single and multiplayer modes (though the beta will only have multiplayer) - The press conference ended with CD Projeckt RED announcing that they would be launching a digital distribution platform called GOG Galaxy. Galaxy will have many of the same features as the Steam platform, minus DRM, any online requirement (unless your game happens to require online to function like an MMO or if you want to connect to update achievements and chat with friends), cross-play will allow players to game with friends who have bought their games on other platforms. The goal of the platform is to provide users with the most convenient and fair ways of playing their games while being completely optional. This could finally be some real competition for Steam. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Delayed

Yesterday, CD Projekt issued an announcement to its fans and shareholders to explain that The Witcher 3 would be delayed into 2015, missing its expected 2014 release window. After a short preamble detailing their commitment to excellence, the Poland-based developer addresses the delay: We could have released the game towards the end of this year as we had initially planned. Yet we concluded that a few additional months will let us achieve the quality that will satisfy us, the quality gamers expect from us. Consequently, we have set the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for February 2015. CD Projekt also had this to say to their fans: Dear gamers – we know many of you would have liked to play The Witcher 3 sooner, as soon as possible, even. We’re sorry to make you wait longer than you, or we, initially assumed you would. At the same time, we believe the game will prove to be worth the wait and meet the expectations you have of us. We believe The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be an exceptional RPG, one of the best, providing many hours of wonderful entertainment. While this is certainly a disappointment for gamers eager to get their hands on the highly anticipated RPG, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. Often, delays are good for giving developers extra time to polish titles and assure their quality; not every delayed game turns into Duke Nukem Forever. And good on CD Projekt for owning up to the situation and apologizing instead of waiting for gamers to find out themselves, which is never pretty. In the meantime, people will have to make do with Witcher comics and our coverage from E3 2013.

  11. Between a successful book series and two popular video game adaptations, Geralt of Rivera, aka The Witcher, has made quite a name for himself in the United States. Dark Horse Comics has decided to give Geralt the graphic treatment. The comic book series will be drafted by Bandette writer Paul Tobin with covers by 100 Bullets cover artist Dave "The Reverend" Johnson and artwork Joe Querio. The story will center on Geralt as he wanders through an area near the Black Forest in the land of Angren. While there, he encounters a widowed man, whose late wife is in quite a murderous mood and has taken over the mansion known as the House of Glass. Of course, this leads to Geralt travelling to the manor to expel the undead creature and safeguard the land. The first issue will be available on March 19, 2014. If you want some more insight into the upcoming Witcher 3, check out our E3 coverage. View full article

  13. The fine folks at CD Projekt RED were kind enough to show us a nearly hour long gameplay demo of the upcoming high-fantasy RPG blockbuster, as well as answer some of our nagging questions. Here is what we took away from what we saw. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is set several years after the events of The Witcher 2, meaning that there are few direct connections to previous games in the series. The decision was made to distance the third title from the previous two so that the team could step away from the political intrigue of the previous titles and focus on Geralt’s personal journey. In The Witcher 3, Geralt is in pursuit of a terrifying and deadly group of spectral warriors known as the Wild Hunt. In the game world, witchers were originally monster hunters and that aspect of the game world will become the central focus of the story. There are several new features being added into The Witcher 3: Trading and Bartering: the new system will make it profitable to travel around the world buying and selling items to locations that might have them in short supply to earn a profit. For example, fish will be cheap in coastal towns, while towns farther inland or far from bodies of water will pay well for fish. Transportation: With the dramatically increased scope of the world, the team at CD Projekt RED wanted to make it easy to traverse the world. To this end, they included abilities and vehicles like swimming climbing, sailing, riding, and fast travel. These means of transportation are not without their hazards however. We were cautioned that sailing into a storm, could result in a ship wreck and having to swim to shore and that swimming comes with its own dangers, like freezing from ice water. A Day/Night Cycle: You will be able to rest and change the time of day. This will have various effects on the monsters you hunt and how you hunt them. The example we were given was that if you were to fight werewolves, you would be better off fighting them in daylight, rather than under the light of a full-moon. Witcher Senses: the visualization of Geralt’s years of training. You’ll be able to see the important investigative markers that will help you track monsters. These clues will lead you to monsters or give you clues regarding how to best defeat them. The scale of The Witcher 3 has increased dramatically. For the purposes of the demo, we were only shown one island, but we were told that island was bigger than all of The Witcher 2. In fact, the entire world is 35x larger than the previous Witcher games and it is entirely open world. The team at CD Projekt RED designed the world to be large, but also dense, so there will always be something new to explore and see just over the next hill or behind the next tree. We were shown a portion of the main quest, which revolves around Geralt’s mission to destroy the Wild Hunt, a ghastly, deadly, and evil collection of spectral warriors. In the gameplay segment, Geralt was searching for Bjorn, the sole survivor of a raid by the Hunt. Traveling to the small village in which Bjorn has gone to stay with relatives, the demonstrator steered us toward some intriguing ruins on the top of a hill. He explained to us that the team has worked very hard to make such areas appealing so that players will want to diverge from the beaten path and explore. In the ruins, we discovered a hulking creature known as a fiend. Looking like a cross between a stag and a rhinoceros, the fiend charged Geralt and we were given the chance to see the titular witcher in combat. More dodge moves have been added since The Witcher 2, increasing maneuverability within combat scenarios. Geralt can also do minor magic, like shooting sparks and flames from his hands. These spells will have different effects on monsters, like lighting them on fire which can then spread elsewhere. As the fight with the fiend progressed, it demonstrated how important it is to know your adversary in The Witcher 3. When you discover what kind of a beast you are going to be facing, it is best to consult the Bestiary, a compendium of Geralt’s lifetime of monster hunting and adventuring. This will give players insight into how best to tackle the creature. With the fiend, he can cast a spell of darkness and shroud itself in shadow, the only visible thing remaining is a singular red eye on its forehead. It can use this opportunity to either attack or escape, making an unprepared attack on the fiend a very poor idea. For prospective players who are just hearing about this series now or who are intrigued, we were assured that players won’t have had to play the The Witcher and The Witcher 2 in order to understand what is happening. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt will release on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC in early 2014. View full article
