With jovial attitudes and company vignettes that resembled employee training videos at times, Bethesda’s theme of “Create” spotlighted the minds behind the games almost as prominently as the games themselves. That resulted in a lighthearted and fun presentation that was backed by several significant announcements. Bethesda touched on pretty much every major IP of its recent catalog, announcing a slew of sequels and updates. They even teased projects aimed at the next generation. Rage 2’s first big showing kicked off in the only way it could: a rowdy Andrew W.K. concert in front of a less raucous crowd of indifferent journalists. The musical performance fit the game’s fresh coat of zaniness. We got a look at the Mad Max-style vehicle shootouts and the arguably more chaotic on-foot shootouts. Say what you want about Rage 2’s semi-obnoxious absurdity, but this demo definitely raised eyebrows and the game already bleeds more personality than its predecessor ever did. The Elder Scrolls Legends calmed things down a bit. The digital trading card game will soon launch with overhauled visuals and comes to all consoles later this year. In more Elder Scrolls news. The Elder Scrolls Online has a new dungeon DLC on the way called Wolfhunter which centers on werewolves. Additionally, Murkmire, a story expansion set in Black Marsh, arrives later this year. A teaser for Doom Eternal took everyone to Hell (in a good way). Described as an “awesome, awesome new sequel to Doom”, it will have twice as many demons as the last game and takes place on an Earth overrun by Hell’s nastiest. Doom Eternal’s full reveal will take place at QuakeCon in August. Speaking of Quake, Quake Champions competitions were announced for QuakeCon and DreamHack Winter. A week-long free trial for the game, currently in Steam Early Access, launched on June 10th. Those who downloaded that week got to continue playing free of charge after the trial expired. A new trailer wrapped things up, though we still don’t have a launch window for the final version. Arkane Studios announced a free Prey update that introduced three new modes: Story, New Game +, and Survival. A roguelike-style DLC called Mooncrash will change enemies, scenarios, and loot with each playthrough for “infinite” replayability. Both Mooncrash and the free update went live that night. Later this summer, Prey gets the hide-and-seek multiplayer mode Typhoon Hunter. It pits one player against five others posing as Mimics. More Wolfenstein is coming in the form of Wolfenstein: Youngblood. This standalone story stars BJ Blazkowicz’s twin daughters, now adults, battling Nazis in the 1980’s. Since there’s two characters, it can be played cooperatively with a buddy. Youngblood releases in 2019. Pete Hines returned to reveal a few virtual reality projects. First, Prey’s Typhoon Hunter, along with an unnamed puzzle-focused single-player, will be playable in VR. Furthemore, Wolfenstein: Cyber Pilot is a VR-exclusive spin-off about a hacker that hijacks Nazi war machines and turns them against their masters. Todd Howard took the stage next. After warming up the crowd with a humorous summary of E3’s history, he then trolled viewers (and himself) with an ad for an Amazon Alexa, audio-only version of Skyrim. The twist: it actually exists. Howard then moved on to the big info dump of Fallout 76. After showing the same trailer from the Xbox briefing, Howard discussed Vault 76’s premise. Players control a citizen chosen to spend 25 years in Vault 76 awaiting Reclamation Day, the day the vault opens. Todd showed a video of the vault dweller exiting the underground home into an untamed West Virginia. Fallout 76 features new rendering and lighting technology, allowing for increased details. West Virginia features six distinct regions filled with new creatures, some of which will be based on local folklore. Todd then revealed that Fallout 76 will be an entirely online experience filled with other human players. However, he quickly assured that it can be played solo (although the game will be tougher), and a main story will still be present. Though Fallout 76 will focus more on survival, Howard described it as a “softcore” experience. Players won’t lose progress, or their character, should they perish. Furthermore, characters won’t be tied to server and their progress carries with them no matter which players they decide to join up with. Worlds will be populated by dozens of human players rather than hundreds or thousands (Howard: “it’s the apocalypse. It’s not an amusement park”). A video of Fallout 76’s building mechanics showed how players can build anything, then move their creations wherever they’d like. To combat threats, multiple active nuclear missile sites will litter the map, which players can use to nuke others to smithereens. Finally, Howard announced a beta for Fallout 76 set for an unknown date, as well as a special Power Armor Edition filled with goodies. He concluded Fallout 76’s segment a release date: November 14 of this year. Todd then announced the immediate availability of Fallout Shelter on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. He used that news to segue into the announcement of The Elder Scrolls: Blades. Described as a “pure Elder Scrolls experience”, its a console-quality title built for mobile platforms.Dungeons are both hand-crafted and procedurally generated, with touch-based combat. Blades features three modes of play as well as a town-building/sharing feature. Despite showing it off on mobile, The Elder Scrolls: Blades will come to consoles, PC, and VR devices and all versions will be connected. The game arrives this fall as a free download, though players can pre-register for it now. Todd wrapped up things by teasing two big future projects. First up was the teaser trailer of the rumored Starfield. This sci-fi, next-generation title will be Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years. If that wasn’t enough, a teaser for The Elder Scrolls VI completed the double-whammy of huge announcements. Of note: Howard described the sixth entry as “the game after” Starfield. Given that Starfield was billed as a next-gen title, Elder Scrolls VI will likely be a long ways out. That wraps up Bethesda. They did a nice job highlighting not only their own internal IP, but also the works of its umbrella studios. Fallout and Elder Scrolls faithful have plenty to look forward to with Starfield as the another, mysterious silver lining. If those franchises aren't your jam, new entries in the Rage, Doom, Wolfenstein, and Prey franchises help cover additional bases. As someone who expected to hear about a new Doom OR Wolfenstein, as well as Starfield OR Elder Scrolls VI, this felt like Bethesda letting fans have their cake and eat it too.   3. Human Head Studios's name might ring a bell for fans of cult classics. The studio was behind games that slowly achieved followings like Prey (2006) and Rune. They even helped create some of the most recognizable titles of the last few years, contributing to BioShock Infinite, Batman: Arkham Origins, and World of Tanks. Now the studio is going back to its roots with a sequel to Rune titled Rune: Ragnarok. Chris Rhinehart, project director at Human Head Studios, expressed his excitement at returning to the world of Rune, “After seventeen years, we are thrilled to finally announce a new Rune game. In the spirit of the original, Rune: Ragnarok has intense and brutal combat in a world steeped in Norse mythology. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve created.” Rune: Ragnarok takes on the ambitious task of creating an open-world RPG set during the apocalypse of Norse myth, the final battle that heralds the end of the world. Fight alongside beasts, men, and gods to survive in a dying universe. Players will pledge allegiance to one of the Norse gods of old in order to curry their favor. That favor can grant special abilities that become very useful when it becomes necessary to raid enemy settlements, fight armies of undead, sail across the seas, and craft powerful weapons. Will you be left standing when Ragnarok ends? No word on a release date or what systems on which Rune: Ragnarok will be appearing, but more games about Norse mythology with Viking action are always welcome. View full article

Their upcoming project takes place on a space station that has come under attack by mysterious, shadowy being with the ability to manipulate the world around themselves in mind-bending ways. By surviving, crafting, and upgrading themselves with human and alien abilities, players might just be able to make it out alive. Creative director Raphael Colantonio and lead designer Ricardo Bare narrate the gameplay trailer, which demonstrates some of the basic combat and uses for weapons outside of fighting. Arkane's Prey takes place on a space station, called Talos One, that has become infected with a mysterious alien presence. These shadowy creatures can take on numerous forms, from humanoid to tiny, spider-like beings. Not only are these creatures so dangerous that the protagonist, Morgan Yu, warns that even one breaching the station's containment could spell doom for humanity, they also possess the ability to disguise themselves as small objects in the environment - an ability that players will also be able to use at some point in their time with Prey. If that doesn't seem like something that will lead to some pretty amazing Let's Plays, I don't know what would. Talos One operated as a hub of human testing and players will be able to obtain new powers and upgrade via eyeball injection "Neuromods." In-depth crafting will play a large part in the game, as well as creative weapons like a gun that shoots hardening resin, which can be used to freeze enemies or create new paths through the environment.   9. Many wondered what Bethesda would show at their pre-E3 conference this year. Would they show a Skyrim remaster? Prey 2? Evil Within 2? Bethesda threw a mixed bag at its audience this year with some predictions coming to pass, some only slightly happening, and others not appearing at all in their announcement line-up. The pre-E3 Bethesda press conference began with a bang that many weren't expecting so close on the heels of Doom's release. A new entry in the Quake series, Quake Champions burst into glorious existence in a hail of gunfire. The team at id Software supposedly have the title running at an impressive 120hz with an unlocked framerate and the cinematic trailer that heralded Quake's revival looked fantastic. The multiplayer arena shooter boasts new characters with unique abilities, each one catering to a different playstyle. Several of Quake's champions show their signature moves in the reveal trailer. The conference then moved through a brief retrospective of what had happened over the past year. The surprise success of Fallout Shelter, The Elder Scrolls Online hanging on and managing to survive, the release of Fallout 4 and Doom were all touched upon. Bethesda then described The Elder Scrolls Legnds, a card game that delves into the lore of The Elder Scrolls universe. Told by a Moth Priest named Kellen, Legends follows the legend of Elder Scrolls lore and pairs that with a strategic card game. The intro cinematic was shown and allowed to speak for itself as to what Legends will be about. Players can join the beta of Legends on the Bethesda website. Moving on to Fallout things, three new expansions to Fallout 4 were briefly teased during the Bethesda showcase. The first, Contraptions Workshop, will allow players to build all kinds of new things in their settlements like elevators, conveyor belts, racks for weapons and armor, ball tracks, and more! Contraptions becomes available on June 14. The second Fallout 4 expansion shown, called Vault-Tec Workshop, grants players the ability to build their own Vaults. Of course, it appear that building a new Vault comes with its own unique challenges, like angry underground monsters, raiders, and more. Once the Vault attracts some residents, players can start conducting experiments on the new inhabitants. The final DLC was revealed with a short camera pan up from the Wasteland to an abandoned Nuka-Cola-themed park. Appropriately enough, this expansion is titled Nuka World and takes place in a long abandoned theme park. No release dates were given for Vault-Tec Workshop or Nuka World. Rounding out the Fallout news, Fallout Shelter's 1.6 update overhauls combat, adds questing, new items, characters, and locations. The addition of questing has apparently bolstered Bethesda's confidence in the mobile title enough to bring it to PC. The update and PC version will be releasing sometime next month. And yes, Bethesda is working on a Skyrim remaster. Titled Skyrim Special Addition brings massively overhauled graphics to the world of Skyrim for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, along with full PC mod support for the consoles. Since the announcement of its existence, Bethesda tweeted that those who own Skyrim and all its add-ons or own the Steam Legendary Edition will receive a free upgrade to Skyrim Special Edition. Skyrim Special Edition releases on October 28. Perhaps the most surprising moment of the night was the reveal of Prey, Arkane Studio's reimagining/reboot of the 2006 Prey. Instead of highlighting spiritual aspects of Native American culture as gameplay mechanics and story beats, the new Prey puts a psychological twist on everything. Forsaking former protagonist Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi, Prey centers on the tormented struggle of Morgan Yu as he awakens on the Talos 1 space station. With a mysterious alien force in pursuit and a growing sense of urgency, Morgan will need to harness his mind-bending abilities to uncover the secrets of the station and get through his ordeal alive. While certainly not the Prey 2 that was once teased in years long past or even the remnants of that amazing "what could have been" game, Prey looks like an interesting project to keep an eye on. Arkane states that Prey will release in 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. A multitude of free new updates are on the way for Doom's SnapMap, allowing players to create new single-player experiences to share online with new props, logic options, and visual themes. New multiplayer content is on the way as well, with new game modes like Exodus, Sector, and three free-for-all modes. Next month a premium DLC pack will release. Called Unto the Evil, it will focus on multiplayer with three new maps, a new demon, a new gun, and more. Perhaps the coolest part of the Doom announcements was the nod to Doom's roots as a shareware title. Following the Bethesda conference, anyone who does not own a copy of Doom can play the first level of the title on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for free. Bethesda followed up the Doom portion of the presentation to talk about The Elder Scrolls Online. A Japanese release of the MMO is on the way, opening up the community of seven million players to Eastern markets. The majority of the ESO talk focused on the release of the The Dark Brotherhood DLC for PC/Mac today and Xbox One/PlayStation 4 on June 14. Bethesda then announced their Bethesda VR initiative which allows players to take a virtual tour of Hell in the world of Doom and play Fallout 4, wandering the Wasteland in full VR. Fallout 4 VR will be possible with Vive support later this fall. The crowning part of the evening was an in-depth look at the gameplay of Dishonored 2 through the eyes of new protagonist Emily Kaldwin. New powers, expanded verticality, and powerful gadgets await players who wish to dive into all that stealth has to offer. Honestly, it looks very slick, so just watch the gameplay.   10. Many wondered what Bethesda would show at their pre-E3 conference this year. Would they show a Skyrim remaster? Prey 2? Evil Within 2? Bethesda threw a mixed bag at its audience this year with some predictions coming to pass, some only slightly happening, and others not appearing at all in their announcement line-up. The pre-E3 Bethesda press conference began with a bang that many weren't expecting so close on the heels of Doom's release. A new entry in the Quake series, Quake Champions burst into glorious existence in a hail of gunfire. The team at id Software supposedly have the title running at an impressive 120hz with an unlocked framerate and the cinematic trailer that heralded Quake's revival looked fantastic. The multiplayer arena shooter boasts new characters with unique abilities, each one catering to a different playstyle. Several of Quake's champions show their signature moves in the reveal trailer. The conference then moved through a brief retrospective of what had happened over the past year. The surprise success of Fallout Shelter, The Elder Scrolls Online hanging on and managing to survive, the release of Fallout 4 and Doom were all touched upon. Bethesda then described The Elder Scrolls Legnds, a card game that delves into the lore of The Elder Scrolls universe. Told by a Moth Priest named Kellen, Legends follows the legend of Elder Scrolls lore and pairs that with a strategic card game. The intro cinematic was shown and allowed to speak for itself as to what Legends will be about. Players can join the beta of Legends on the Bethesda website. Moving on to Fallout things, three new expansions to Fallout 4 were briefly teased during the Bethesda showcase. The first, Contraptions Workshop, will allow players to build all kinds of new things in their settlements like elevators, conveyor belts, racks for weapons and armor, ball tracks, and more! Contraptions becomes available on June 14. The second Fallout 4 expansion shown, called Vault-Tec Workshop, grants players the ability to build their own Vaults. Of course, it appear that building a new Vault comes with its own unique challenges, like angry underground monsters, raiders, and more. Once the Vault attracts some residents, players can start conducting experiments on the new inhabitants. The final DLC was revealed with a short camera pan up from the Wasteland to an abandoned Nuka-Cola-themed park. Appropriately enough, this expansion is titled Nuka World and takes place in a long abandoned theme park. No release dates were given for Vault-Tec Workshop or Nuka World.
