  1. There will also be an open beta beginning May 19. Who else is ready to throw down fisticuffs with the heroes and villains from across Blizzard's history? At launch, Heroes of the Storm will contain over thirty playable characters and seven different battlefields. Each battleground will be unique with different goals and challenges. Post-launch, players can expect to see more heroes and maps being added, along with a variety of skins and mounts. The open beta will follow the conclusion of the Heroes of the Dorm collegiate eSports tournament. Students from over 400 schools will be participating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tuition on the line. The championship will be held on April 26 at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in LA. It will also be televised live in prime time on ESPN. More details should be available as the event approaches. Heroes of the Storm will be launching on June 2 for PC. Don't forget to sign up for Extra Life to help sick and injured kids in hospitals around the US and Canada by playing games!
  2. League of Legends was once the most played and most popular game in the world. To this day, it enjoys a colossal following that most games can't even dream of matching. Let's dive into the history of the MOBA genre and discuss some of the game's best qualities and biggest faults. With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. When we can't have a proper discussion, we will be breaking off to do these shorter mini-casts, Honorable Mentions, to talk about fringe games that we might not otherwise be able to talk about on a full episode. Outro music: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening 'Sweet Dreams, Koholint' by DaMonz, Christine Giguère, Denis Bluteau (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR03825) You can download or listen to the podcast over on Soundcloud, our hosting site, and iTunes. A YouTube version is available, as well! If you want to have your opinion heard on air, share your opinion in the comments, follow the show on Twitter, and participate in the weekly polls: @BestGamesPeriod New episodes of The Best Games Period will be released every Monday Don't forget to sign up for Extra Life to help sick and injured kids in hospitals around the US and Canada by playing games!

  4. League of Legends has a long and complicated history with its own lore. Plagued by rewritten character biographies and nations whose conflicts have been wiped from existence over the years, Riot Games decided to nullify all of the game's fictional past in 2015 (even eliminating the very concept of summoner's, the very role of the players themselves). Since then, new backstories have emerged for their various characters touching on new wars, new factions, new pieces of Runeterra's history. Now, presumably with a firmer grip on the lore of the popular MOBA, Riot has teamed up with Marvel to produce a line of comics set within the League of Legends universe that highlights the origins of some of their most iconic heroes. The first in the League of Legends graphic novel series will be titled Ashe: Warmother. The comics begin to release May, 2019. Warmother tells the story of how Ashe developed her ability to shoot magic freezing arrows and leader of the icy north. The full summary reads: Raised in the savage wilds of the north, Ashe is an Iceborn, a warrior gifted with a magical connection to her frozen homeland—and burdened by her mother’s fanatical expectations. When they set out on a dangerous quest for the truth behind an ancient myth, bonds are broken, secrets come to light, and Runeterra is forever changed. Will young Ashe become the leader her people need? Or is destiny merely an empty dream? Here's hoping there aren't more retcons in store after the launch of these graphic novels. 6. A new arena brawler from Kiz Studios has made its way exclusively onto the PlayStation 4. Trans-Galactic Tournament, a 4v4 multiplayer arena title, brings free-to-play MOBA action to the PS4. Players can download the title over PSN and get into the game's current roster of ten champions. In-game, champions can take advantage of over one hundred power-ups across six different arenas and three game modes. These game modes are described like so: "Plunderball is Capture-the-Flag meets Thunderdome. Conquest is a many-headed hydra mutation of King-of-the-Hill, where the challenge isn’t capturing control points, it’s keeping them - and Annihilation (our version of Deathmatch), well, champions have fists for a reason." Unlike most of the popular MOBAs currently available, players don't level their characters while in-game. Instead, players customize their preferred champions outside the action and tailor them to their play style. Another feature that separates Trans-Galactic Tournament from the MOBA pack is the ability to jump over or through obstacles. You can even jump on top of enemies and use them as platforms to reach shortcuts. If you're worried about investing time in the beta only to have your progress in-game wiped away when the full game launches, Kiz Studios has your back. All progress made during the beta will carry over when Trans-Galactic Tournament launches later this summer. View full article

  9. Trailers for Blizzard's upcoming MOBA Heroes of the Storm, World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor, and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls have appeared online and beg for you to look at them with your face. Tell me if you have heard this one before: An angel, a space marine, and an assassin walk into a desert and run into a lich king, an alien, and the devil... then they fight! While that might not make a very funny joke, it does make a pretty flippin' awesome trailer, especially when it is made by Blizzard, who have pretty much cornered the market on flippin' awesome cinematics. I'm pretty hopeful that Heroes of the Storm will turn out well. With great examples of how to develop and run successful MOBA titles in League of Legends and Dota 2 and Blizzard's tendency to support titles for long periods of time, I can't really see how they could botch an attempt to create a successful MOBA. Time, of course, will be the judge, but I have faith that Blizzard can deliver. BlizzCon was also a perfect time to announce a new World of Warcraft expansion that uses time travel to revisit ground covered in the original Warcraft titles, as well as implementing a slew of new features. Warlords of Draenor will overhaul the character models, up the level cap to 100, provide new PvP zones, add new monsters, dungeons, and raids, and the ability to boost to level 90 immediately to play late game content right off the bat. Will this be enough to bring back people who have strayed from the Warcraft fold? Finally a gameplay trailer was shown regarding the Diablo III expansion Reaper of Souls. The new add-on will include an adventure mode that unlocks all waypoints, dramatically opening up the world for players to begin playing and go fight anything, anywhere. Two other additions are made to the adventure mode: Bounties and Nephalem Rifts. Bounties are basically random hits on powerful monsters that can be used to get more gold and experience, while rifts are portals to dungeons that contain rare and valuable loot. In addition to the adventure mode teaser, there was also snippets of gameplay shown from the PS4 version of Diablo III. What do you think? Excited? Itching to try World of Warcraft or return to it? Ready for a new MOBA or more Diablo III? Let us know what you think! View full article
