  1. Metal Gear Solid V made an appearance right off the bat at the Microsoft press conference in a gameplay trailer. The gameplay clips highlighted how there will be live weather that changes realistically, the vehicles used to traverse the open world landscape, and the in-game day/night cycle. A new addition to the the series, besides being the first truly open-world Metal Gear title, will be the ability to drive vehicles and the sneaking options that go with each one. For example, Snake will be able to control jeeps, tanks, horses, and make use of various sneaking maneuvers with each, like the ability to hide within the flatbed of a truck or cling to the side of a horse. Since MGSV is set in 1984, players presumably won’t be finding much like the Stealth Camo from Metal Gear Solid IV anywhere in this game. However, in the Metal Gear Solid franchise nothing really remains off limits, so we will have to wait for the full release to see what kind of high-tech/retro gadgets become available. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC, as well as receiving downgraded ports to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

  3. Konami held its pre-E3 show today to make a variety of announcements. The event began with the president of Konami Digital Entertainment, Tomoyuki Tsuboi, talking about the company’s past as an early arcade cabinet manufacturer and its initiative to put Dance Dance Revolution Classroom Edition in American schools to help combat obesity. After that brief announcement, the event shifted its focus into the company’s social, mobile, and gambling titles for iOS and Android. A new game engine was announced for the title Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. Named Fluidity and based on Metal Gear Solid V’s Fox Engine, the goal of the new engine is to provide more realistic visuals, animations, and crowd interaction. PES 2014’s director touted the visual fidelity of the engine as “much higher quality than have ever been seen in a sports game.” Hideo Kojima made his appearance to discuss Metal Gear Solid V and the decision to change Solid Snake’s voice. After teasing the main themes of the game on Twitter for the last couple weeks, Kojima confirmed that MGSV is going to be centered around the themes of race and revenge. The game will also take place in 1984, moving away from the near future setting of MGS4. Kojima announced that the voice and animations of the iconic Solid Snake will be done by Keifer Sutherland, best known for his role as Jack Bauer in the television series 24. A large portion of the MGSV part of this press event was dedicated to trying to ease the blow to series fans that the original voice actor, David Hayter, would not be reprising his role as the familiar protagonist. Kojima explained that this was due to the need for facial animation capture concerns and to provide an authentic 1984 voice. The lead director of Mercurysteam then came on to talk about Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 and how it connects to the first Lords of Shadow. Players will take on the role of Dracula in the modern world, able to visit and explore series staples like the Dracula mansion, but also able to move around within a modern city. In Lords of Shadow 2, Mercurysteam assured players, you will be able to move around the game world with no loading times. The team also discussed their struggles to implement a free, player-controlled camera, a risky move for any game. The talk concluded with a new cinematic trailer for Lords of Shadow 2, which confirms that Sir Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Zobek from the first game. You can view the full broadcast here (edit: the broadcast has since been made private).

  5. Today, during the Kojima Productions talk at GDC, Hideo Kojima finally dropped the bomb that many had been expecting: The Phantom Pain teased during last year’s Spike Video Game Awards was really Metal Gear Solid V. What came as a bigger surprise was that another announced Metal Gear game, Ground Zeroes, was also Metal Gear Solid V. The developer then showed off a new trailer of the upcoming stealth-action title that was an expanded mash-up of the previous two trailers for The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes, which you can view below. I’m not sure how much information can be pulled out of the trailer, especially when things start going crazy about halfway in, but I’ll do my best. The game stars Big Boss as a protagonist after having been in a coma for 9 years and missing his left hand for unknown reasons. It is possible that some mission went terribly wrong involving Big Boss and Johnny “Akiba” Sasaki from MGS4, as he could be the sunglasses wearing person toward the beginning of the trailer. Someone or some organization wants him dead or out of the picture, which explains the images of soldiers storming a hospital and of Big Boss in a hospital gown. It also seems to imply some connection with MGS3 with the reintroduction of the FOX unit and the cryptic phrase, “From ‘FOX’ Two Phantoms were Born.” One of those phantoms is clearly Big Boss, but who the other phantom might be, is somewhat unclear as most of them seem to have perished in previous games. “FOX vs. XOF” flashes on screen for a brief second, suggesting that XOF is another group, possibly created by the mysterious survivor of the FOX unit, who will serve as Big Boss’ primary antagonist. The final scene of the trailer shows Big Boss astride a motorcycle wearing a leather jacket that says Diamond Dogs and a voiceover that says, “Do you see this? Diamond Dogs. Our new home.” Perhaps this means that Big Boss will become part of a new unit called the Diamond Dogs to fight the XOF? The last words before the trailer ends are, “V has come to,” said by a lady in a slight Russian accent. There are numerous strange things in the clips shown at GDC like the flaming unicorn-pegasus, the giant flying fire-whale, a stallion that gets struck by lightning, a man with a horribly burned face, and more. What does it all mean and what roles will these things play in the game? Your guess is as good as mine. Let us know what you think in the comments!
