  1. Star Citizen has been in development for a long, long time. Despite being worked on since 2012 and raising hundreds of millions of dollars, the space flight sim/MMO remains in an alpha state. With a clear timeline for content updates and an upcoming single-player game that appears to be incredibly interesting, the vision of what Star Citizen could be one day presents a tantalizing vision. There's honestly enough in the story of Star Citizen to do a full episode on it one day, but the current state of the game precludes that potential episode. With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. When we can't have a proper discussion, we will be breaking off to do these shorter mini-casts, Honorable Mentions, to talk about fringe games that we might not otherwise be able to talk about on a full episode. Outro music: Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun 'Partons à l'Aventure' by Sir_NutS (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR03896) You can download or listen to the podcast over on Soundcloud, our hosting site, and iTunes. 5. If you want weird games, the developers at Usaya have you covered. One of their most prized creations stars a young woman who encounters a freakish monster that can only loosely be considered a horse, but possesses the head of a man. It also happens to be a dating simulator (with quite a few microtransactions). Fittingly, Usaya titled their strange, horrific creation, "My Horse Prince." It has amassed something of an underground cult following as an oddity on mobile devices, and, hey, we even prominently featured My Horse Prince in an article about Usaya a while back. While not even remotely one of the best games of all-time, its profound weirdness at least deserves a look. With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. 7. Released during the height of Prequel Mania (which was a thing before they came out and reality set in), Star Wars Episode I: Racer quickly became one of the best selling sci-fi racing games of all-time. Racer managed to translate one of the most memorable scenes in the prequel films into a game full of a worlds never before seen in Star Wars, the thrill of speed, and plenty of flaming/exploding podracer engines. It might not have aged from its N64 days, but at the very least it's worthy of an honorable mention. 9. The 2012 release of Dragon's Dogma seemed to hit at a time during which people were hungry for rich open-worlds with unique combat systems, difficult encounters, and that touch of artistic strangeness. It scratched an itch that the gaming community was having at the time and earned itself a cult following that persists to this day, spurring the game, along with its expansions, seeing a PC release and even a port last year to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The grapple/grab mechanic brought on a lot of comparisons to Shadow of the Colossus, and seeing as the Shadow of the Colossus remake recently released, what better time to talk a little bit about Dragon's Dogma? With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. When we can't have a proper discussion, we will be breaking off to do these shorter mini-casts, Honorable Mentions, to talk about fringe games that we might not otherwise be able to talk about on a full episode. 11. Fueled with a love of retro PC RPGs and the dream of reviving them for the current generation, four Finnish developers put everything on the line to craft Legend of Grimrock. Their creation climbed to the top of the Steam sales charts and spawned both a sequel and a successful Kickstarter for a live-action series (which has yet to materialize). While it certainly has flawed AI and a repetitive environment, Legend of Grimrock deserves another look for the way it brought a dormant genre back to life. 17. Halo 3: ODST broke from what was expected of a game in the Halo franchise and from what many expect of first-person shooters. It shifted the focus, if only for a moment, away from super powered Spartan soldiers and focused instead on the struggles of the normal people caught up in the aftermath of galaxy-altering events. Players experienced the story from multiple angles and perspectives while unraveling the game's central mystery. Daniel Jones lays out why you should certainly consider giving this Halo title a chance. 21. Terry Cavanagh and Stephen Levelle (also known as Increpare) teamed up back in 2011 to create the video game equivalent of a short story. Oíche Mhaith (which translates to Irish for "good night") is free, takes about 20 minutes to complete, and will leave you a sobbing mess. Fair warning: it features some NSFW language and images if you're interested in giving it a try. It's basically an M-rated, 8-bit Flash game about a broken family as experienced by a kid. If you are looking for a game that will haunt you for days, Oíche Mhaith will give you much to think about. You can find and play Oíche Mhaith on the Increpare website: https://ded.increpare.com/~locus/oiche_mhaith/ With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. When we can't have a proper discussion, we will be breaking off to do these shorter mini-casts, Honorable Mentions, to talk about fringe games that we might not otherwise be able to talk about on a full episode. Outro music: VVVVVV 'Clubbed Baby VVVVVVeal' by Danny Baranowsky (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR02205) You can download or listen to the podcast over on Soundcloud, our hosting site, and iTunes. A YouTube version is (sometimes) available as well, so you can watch what we are talking about while we talk about it! 23. A 2004 release from Project Aces, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War attempted to bridge the gap between arcade flight sim and wartime drama. The result was an incredibly engaging, beautiful experience that ruminates on the modern incarnation of war. Combining stellar in-game voice acting with tense aerial action set pieces and gorgeously crafted pre-rendered CGI cutscenes, Ace Combat 5 holds up as the best the series has offered to date. From what little we've seen of Ace Combat 7, they seem to be tapping into the same themes and methods of storytelling that made The Unsung War so fantastic - and that can only be a good thing. With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult. 25. This week Daniel Jones flies solo in an Honorable Mention dedicated to the zen mobile game Alto's Adventure. The endless runner (endless ski-er?) utterly captivated Daniel in early 2015 and has been a game he has found difficult to put down ever since. The premier effort from studio Snowman it managed to generate some significant buzz in the mainstream press who praised its quality. Take a ride with Daniel as he takes you down the slopes of the thoroughly enchanting indie skiing odyssey.
