  1. The fine folks at CD Projekt RED were kind enough to show us a nearly hour long gameplay demo of the upcoming high-fantasy RPG blockbuster, as well as answer some of our nagging questions. Here is what we took away from what we saw. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is set several years after the events of The Witcher 2, meaning that there are few direct connections to previous games in the series. The decision was made to distance the third title from the previous two so that the team could step away from the political intrigue of the previous titles and focus on Geralt’s personal journey. In The Witcher 3, Geralt is in pursuit of a terrifying and deadly group of spectral warriors known as the Wild Hunt. In the game world, witchers were originally monster hunters and that aspect of the game world will become the central focus of the story. There are several new features being added into The Witcher 3: Trading and Bartering: the new system will make it profitable to travel around the world buying and selling items to locations that might have them in short supply to earn a profit. For example, fish will be cheap in coastal towns, while towns farther inland or far from bodies of water will pay well for fish. Transportation: With the dramatically increased scope of the world, the team at CD Projekt RED wanted to make it easy to traverse the world. To this end, they included abilities and vehicles like swimming climbing, sailing, riding, and fast travel. These means of transportation are not without their hazards however. We were cautioned that sailing into a storm, could result in a ship wreck and having to swim to shore and that swimming comes with its own dangers, like freezing from ice water. A Day/Night Cycle: You will be able to rest and change the time of day. This will have various effects on the monsters you hunt and how you hunt them. The example we were given was that if you were to fight werewolves, you would be better off fighting them in daylight, rather than under the light of a full-moon. Witcher Senses: the visualization of Geralt’s years of training. You’ll be able to see the important investigative markers that will help you track monsters. These clues will lead you to monsters or give you clues regarding how to best defeat them. The scale of The Witcher 3 has increased dramatically. For the purposes of the demo, we were only shown one island, but we were told that island was bigger than all of The Witcher 2. In fact, the entire world is 35x larger than the previous Witcher games and it is entirely open world. The team at CD Projekt RED designed the world to be large, but also dense, so there will always be something new to explore and see just over the next hill or behind the next tree. We were shown a portion of the main quest, which revolves around Geralt’s mission to destroy the Wild Hunt, a ghastly, deadly, and evil collection of spectral warriors. In the gameplay segment, Geralt was searching for Bjorn, the sole survivor of a raid by the Hunt. Traveling to the small village in which Bjorn has gone to stay with relatives, the demonstrator steered us toward some intriguing ruins on the top of a hill. He explained to us that the team has worked very hard to make such areas appealing so that players will want to diverge from the beaten path and explore. In the ruins, we discovered a hulking creature known as a fiend. Looking like a cross between a stag and a rhinoceros, the fiend charged Geralt and we were given the chance to see the titular witcher in combat. More dodge moves have been added since The Witcher 2, increasing maneuverability within combat scenarios. Geralt can also do minor magic, like shooting sparks and flames from his hands. These spells will have different effects on monsters, like lighting them on fire which can then spread elsewhere. As the fight with the fiend progressed, it demonstrated how important it is to know your adversary in The Witcher 3. When you discover what kind of a beast you are going to be facing, it is best to consult the Bestiary, a compendium of Geralt’s lifetime of monster hunting and adventuring. This will give players insight into how best to tackle the creature. With the fiend, he can cast a spell of darkness and shroud itself in shadow, the only visible thing remaining is a singular red eye on its forehead. It can use this opportunity to either attack or escape, making an unprepared attack on the fiend a very poor idea. For prospective players who are just hearing about this series now or who are intrigued, we were assured that players won’t have had to play the The Witcher and The Witcher 2 in order to understand what is happening.   3. During the EA Press conference yesterday, John Vechey of PopCap Games took the stage to tell the crowd of gaming journalists that Garden Warfare was not a joke and very much a real product. The upcoming title combines the popular Plants v. Zombies formula with third-person action and some light tower defense elements. Vechey demonstrated a four player co-op session highlighting the four known classes: the soldier-esque Pea Shooter, the medic/rapid-firing Sunflower, the long-ranged Cactus, and the brawling Chomper. As the level progressed, players were able to plant vegetation in flower pots to provide fire support or bonuses to nearby allies. Occasionally, power-ups dropped in the level, like flying garlic drones. The session on display to the crowd at the conference was from Garden Warfare's survival mode, which pitted players against waves of enemies culminating with a boss monster. Garden Warfare will be coming first to Xbox One and Xbox 360 before making its way to PC and other platforms.

  5. Yesterday, Microsoft, free of discussing hardware and the non-gaming aspects of its system, focused squarely on the games. If you weren't able to watch the event yourself, don't have the time, or just plain don't feel like watching it, we've got you covered. In this overview we briefly describe and link various parts of the press conference for your convenience. Price and Release Window for Xbox One The two big questions on everybody's mind was how much was this thing going to cost and when to give Microsoft their money. Both questions were answered. Kinect Sports Rivals Before the conference even began in earnest, Microsoft announced Kinect Sports Rivals on the Spike TV pre-news conference coverage. The title will be developed by Rare for the Xbox One and will release sometime this holiday season. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Microsoft opened the press conference not with a word, but with a brand new look at Metal Gear Solid V which showed off new features, locations, weather conditions, and characters. Game Plan for the Xbox 360 After the Metal Gear bombshell, Microsoft went on to explain the future of the Xbox 360, promising hundreds of games and focusing on three of the big ones: former PC exclusive World of Tanks, Max, the Curse of Brotherhood, and Dark Souls II. Eleven Exclusive Titles After getting most of the nitty gritty out of the way, the creators of the Xbox One went on to detail a number of the exclusives that will be available for the system in the near future, some at launch. No More MS Points Microsoft has decided to ditch the Microsoft Points system in favor of using real currency, probably because they realized having an alternate currency was just serving to confuse people out of buying their products online. The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt Though previously announced, CD Projekt confirmed that the game would be an open world, utilize optional voice commands, and that SmartGlass could be used to manage inventory and character progression. Battlefield 4 A live demo was shown of the game, beginning on a sinking aircraft carrier and moving into a boat assault on a larger vessel. Microsoft confirmed that the first map DLC will be available on Xbox One before it is released anywhere else. Live Streaming and Gameplay Recording Details Microsoft clarified some aspects of how it will allow gamers to live stream their gameplay via Twitch and how gamers will be able to save, edit and record their non-streamed gameplay. Below Below appears to be a promising indie title about exploring the underground areas of a mysterious island and it comes from the same people that created the game and music of Sword and Sworcery. Keep your eye on this one. Minecraft Minecraft made its appearance to confirm that it would indeed be on the Xbox One, that the level size would increase, and that multiplayer capabilities would be greatly expanded upon. Black Tusk's Secret Project To be honest, we weren't shown more than a brief glimpse of the game before the conference moved on. All we know about it is that it is a next-gen title.

The Xbox One unveil left a certain segment of the gaming population with questions about the console's ability to record gameplay sessions and share them with friends, or if the console would include that kind of functionality at all. With a recent app on Xbox 360 and an established history with Microsoft, many had suspected (myself included) suspected that a partnership with the online streaming service, Twitch.tv, was in the works. Today those suspicions were confirmed. Xbox One will be able to broadcast live gameplay sessions online to followers and friends. Players will also be able to record these sessions, save, edit, publish, and record commentary with the Kinect. Aside from streaming, the game recording abilities of the Xbox One allow you to view past recordings on SmartGlass. While all of these features sound lovely, some people are wondering who owns the rights to those videos. Does Microsoft own them, or publish them on their own channel? Can you upload your videos to YouTube? If not, what does that mean for streamers and video game commentators, the people who make a living based on creating entertaining or educational videos based on video games? There are a number of questions that should be answered before giving in to the hype.

The Xbox One will retail at $499, €499, and £429 depending on where you live, and the console will release sometime in November. Each unit will come bundled with a Kinect version 2.0, with a blu-ray player built into the system, and a wireless controller. What do you guys think of the price? Too much? To little? Just right?

  11. Yusuf Mehdi took the stage for Microsoft today to announce the plans for the next three years of the Xbox 360. A new model for the Xbox 360 based on the Xbox One design is available starting today. The sleek design is smaller and will come packaged with a Kinect, though no price drop is in sight. Mehdi also explained that Xbox Live Gold memberships will extend to Xbox One as well as 360. Two free games will be given away every month to Gold Members, starting with Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3. Mehdi went on to promise hundreds of new games for 360 over the next three years. He singled out three titles in particular coming to 360. Perhaps one of the biggest bombshells was that World of Tanks, a competitive PC giant with over 60 million players, is coming to 360, expanding the competitive eSports edge of the console (as well as tanks blowing each other sky-high). The CEO of Wargaming took the stage, explaining the global phenomenon of World of Tanks and that the 48 million member Xbox Live Community was a compelling reason to bring the game PC to Xbox 360. World of Tanks will remain a free-to-play title while transitioning to console for Gold subscribers (and free for seven days for Silver subscribers), though it is unknown if it will be coming to Xbox One. Press Play, a quirky indie studio revealed its work on Max, the Curse of Brotherhood. The trailer for the game seemed to indicate a plot similar to the 80s cult film, Labyrinth. The trailer starts out with a young boy who casts a spell to make his younger brother disappear. The spell works, opening a portal between worlds and an evil creature abducts his brother and Max must journey, through platforms and hazards to retrieve him.You can view the announcement trailer below. Dark Souls II rounded out the three Xbox 360 titles, appearing to feature updated graphics, weapons and enemies, but nothing incredibly new or revolutionary was displayed for those familiar with the franchise. All three games discussed for Xbox 360 should be releasing later this year.

  13. Metal Gear Solid V made an appearance right off the bat at the Microsoft press conference in a gameplay trailer. The gameplay clips highlighted how there will be live weather that changes realistically, the vehicles used to traverse the open world landscape, and the in-game day/night cycle. A new addition to the the series, besides being the first truly open-world Metal Gear title, will be the ability to drive vehicles and the sneaking options that go with each one. For example, Snake will be able to control jeeps, tanks, horses, and make use of various sneaking maneuvers with each, like the ability to hide within the flatbed of a truck or cling to the side of a horse. Since MGSV is set in 1984, players presumably won’t be finding much like the Stealth Camo from Metal Gear Solid IV anywhere in this game. However, in the Metal Gear Solid franchise nothing really remains off limits, so we will have to wait for the full release to see what kind of high-tech/retro gadgets become available. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC, as well as receiving downgraded ports to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

A new addition to the the series, besides being the first truly open-world Metal Gear title, will be the ability to drive vehicles and the sneaking options that go with each one. For example, Snake will be able to control jeeps, tanks, horses, and make use of various sneaking maneuvers with each, like the ability to hide within the flatbed of a truck or cling to the side of a horse. Since MGSV is set in 1984, players presumably won’t be finding much like the Stealth Camo from Metal Gear Solid IV anywhere in this game. However, in the Metal Gear Solid franchise nothing really remains off limits, so we will have to wait for the full release to see what kind of high-tech/retro gadgets become available.   15. The head of Microsoft Studios, Phil Spencer, took the stage today at the Microsoft press conference to reveal a stable of Xbox One games, some of which will be available at launch. "We have more games in development now than at any other time in Microsoft Studio's history," Spencer proclaimed proudly, before launching into a press announcement packed with new game announcements, reveals, and details. First announced as a launch title, Ryse: Son of Rome is a third-person action title focusing on delivering cinematic gameplay. Set in a time of strife in the Roman empire, Ryse places players in the role of Roman general named Marius Titus, battling the enemies of Rome. The gameplay trailer indicated that much of the combat would heavily rely on quick-time events. The game will run on the new CryEngine. Microsoft also spent a small amount of time introducing a revitalized Killer Instinct, marking the return of a beloved fighting franchise to the forefront of gaming. After a brief trailer, a live gameplay demonstration was performed on-stage. If you have ever wanted to play a game that pits a werewolf against a velociraptor, this is definitely a game to keep your eyes on. Ted Price from Insomniac Games, a developer who's previous work has only ever been on Sony consoles, took the stage to announce Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive. The super-stylized open world of Sunset Overdrive is full of monsters, possibly zombies, and pockets of survivors armed with ridiculous weaponry, like vinyl record launchers. Players will be able to traverse the world quickly and easily with little to no loading times. The trailer hints that weapons might be upgradable with items found throughout the world, like the energy drink combined with a shotgun. The Forza series made its obligatory appearance with Forza 5. Touting the unrivaled automotive realism it brings to the table and the presence of the McLaren P1 within the game and on the stage. One of only two P1s in the world was seen rising through the stage at E3 to promote the next installment in the Forza series. One of the newest additions to the series is the "Driveatar," which will learn from players as they drive in-game. While the player is offline, the "driveatar" will compete online against friends and strangers, rewarding said player with experience and money earned when they return. More details were given regarding Remedy Entertainment's Quantum Break. The studio's director, Sam Lake, took the stage to discuss the title's unique way of bridging the gap between television and video games. The choices made throughout the mysterious title will generate a personalized version of the television show and the show will elaborate on aspects of the game and its world. The main premise of the game is that you take on the role of a character who survived a failed experiment that has caused time to stutter and stop, but leaves the protagonist apparently unaffected. The possibly crazy, delightfully twisted mind of Swery65 and the team behind the cult hit Deadly Premonition have been brought on board to develop an episodic murder mystery series called D4. Practically nothing is known about this game, and given the tendency toward the bizarre and obscure that was apparent in Deadly Premonition, D4 is likely to hold many surprises and secrets. Two members from the team behind Project Spark took the stage to discuss the gaming toolkit that allows non-coders to become developers and create games from scratch based on their software. They showed off different abilities like being able to edit objects in the game world and imbue the with different traits, like turning a rock into a loyal and helpful pet ally. They also played a film reel showcasing the many different kinds of games that gamers will be able to create, like on-rails shooters, fantasy adventures, platformers, and more. Dead Rising 3 was announced as a platform exclusive for Microsoft. The city of Los Perdidos is overrun with zombies and it is up to mechanic Nick, to try and survive the outbreak. Using a crafting system that works on the fly, Nick can create interesting and powerful weapons like sledge buzz saws to make the overwhelming hordes of undead slightly easier to deal with. There will be no loading times while navigating the city, though driving through a thick pack of the undead could result in a dangerous stall-out or a particularly strong gripped zombie might be able to latch onto the vehicle and tear Nick out. For the most part, Nick will have to rely on distractions to get out of the worst of most situations, or call in the aid of a friend with SmartGlass, which can summon airstrikes or other forms of support. In a second return of a beloved franchise (at least in a spiritual sense), a new game called Crimson Dragon was announced for Xbox One from the creator of Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust. The title features dragons, flying, lots of explosions, and MOAR DRAGONS! One of Microsoft's final announcements was... well, you might just want to watch the reveal trailer below and find out for yourself. The final reveal of the conference was that Titanfall, a sci-fi FPS from the creators of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, was going to be a Microsoft exclusive, appearing on PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. The game features a"single-player level of polish," despite making multiplayer the core of the game. Every player will have jet packs, be able to double jump, do some light wall-running, grab high ledges, and call down a mechanical suit, known as Titans, from space. Combat fluidly features both human soldiers and mechs battling alongside and against each other. On my list of things to look forward to in the next-gen of consoles, giant robots fighting is definitely rates pretty high.

The game will be built on the Frostbite 3 game engine. It will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 19 this year and it will also be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Rivals allows players to take on the role of either a police officer or a racer, pitting the two sides against each other. Each faction has its own goals and challenges. Racers aim to make names for themselves by making the most daring escapes and evading more and more cops. More escapes will earn players more points with which they can unlock new cars and items. As a cop, players make use of teamwork to pursue and capture the racers and earn points for every racer busted. Officers will also rise through the ranks and unlock exclusive vehicles and pursuit technology. The game will make use of a new online feature called AllDrive, which will provide players with smooth transitions from single player to co-op to multiplayer. Friends and enemies will be able to enter races as they unfold, lending an amount of unpredictability into every situation. Need for Speed Rivals will also come with the features fans have come to expect: High-fidelity graphics, stat tracking, customizable cars, and upgradable tech for both the cops and the racers. Jack Gardner: If console manufacturers had their hearts set on getting in on the growing eSports industry, what more could they do than the features the PS4 was announced to have (i.e. accessible streaming options, partnership with a streaming service, increasing the amount of competitive titles available, integrating social media, etc.)? Sundance DiGiovanni: In addition to all of the great technology and features planned for PS4, in order to have a strong eSports presence it really comes down to the games themselves. Titles need to have competitive settings built in and a strong community following to be successful in the eSports landscape. He’s not wrong. Many recent games billing themselves as the next big thing in eSports have failed or been only marginally successful. Tribes: Ascend and Heroes of Newerth are perfect examples. Both games are free-to-play, relying on microtransactions to make money for the developer, which would seem to guarantee a large user base because who doesn’t love a free game? However, despite holding tournaments with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, neither have found anywhere near as big a following as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, StarCraft 2, or League of Legends. The bottom line is that not many people are interested in watching professional gamers play a game that isn’t popular and that lack of interest kills eSports potential. Jack: What can developers do to create games better geared toward eSports (in terms of casting, recording, content distribution, etc.)? Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s eSports features seem to be the best consoles offer. Can developers do better or are those what we can expect from future console releases? Sundance: Activision and Treyarch did an incredible job of developing Black Ops 2 with eSports in mind; that is why we are featuring it on our MLG Pro Circuit this year. They connected with the eSports community, attended our events, listened to what players wanted out of a game and even brought on Pro Players to consult on the feature set. They were dedicated to making the game work and they should be a model for other game publishers looking to create a successful eSports title. Now that we have seen just what is possible when you create a video game from the ground up with eSports in mind, we can reasonably expect to see other titles aping the features in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Throwing some statistics out there: From 2010 to 2012, MLG saw its audience grow from 1.8 million to 11.7 million, a growth of about 636%. None of this growth would have been remotely possible without the ability to stream via services like Twitch and Ustream. As Sundance said, having the ability to stream built into the console will allow more people to enter the streaming arena and make a name for themselves. Do you think we could expect to see MLG or other eSports content making its way onto consoles in the form of apps or built-in functionality? It was announced last year, but since then it seems to have disappeared from the public light. What could have happened to it? Hopefully we will see it crossover into eSports efforts on the console, but for now it seems to be a broader initiative. As far as why they picked Ustream over Twitch - I really can't speak to that. I wasn't involved in the decision making process. The fact that Sony partnered with Ustream over Twitch certainly seems to indicate that they are aiming for a wider array of people interested in streaming for various reasons. However, it does seem like an odd decision, given that Twitch has made a name for itself (literally made a name for itself, changing from Justin.tv to Twitch.tv to cater to the gaming crowd) by focusing on streamed game content. Our theory: It could be that Twitch was already partnered with another company. Remember that Xbox 360 exclusive streaming app from Twitch? Remember that after the announcement that it existed, it promptly went completely dark, but the company insisted it was still being worked on? Remember that both the PS4 and the next Microsoft console are both expected to launch this holiday season? It is highly likely that the reason Sony wasn’t able to get Twitch on-board as their streaming service is because Twitch was busy creating services for the next-gen Xbox, which would certainly explain why not much has been heard about it recently. It is highly likely that the reason Sony wasn’t able to get Twitch on-board as their streaming service is because Twitch was busy creating services for the next-gen Xbox, which would certainly explain why not much has been heard about it recently.
