  5. February has come and gone, leaving us with great announcements from the past month and some events coming in the near future. If you haven’t yet, make sure to sign up for Extra Life 2017 over on extra-life.org. Buckle in, because you are all freaking amazing! Community Update In just the first two months of 2017, over 4,500 people have registered to participate in Extra Life. Together, we have raised over $214,000 for the kids and we still have 10 months left in the year! If you want to take your fundraising to the next level, we’ve created some useful apps to help you reach more people than ever before. Who thinks we can raise over $10 million this year?! PAX East is coming up March 10-12 and the Boston Guild will be on site registering interested attendees. If you’ll be there, make sure to wear some Extra Life gear and swing by booth #10046 on the show floor to say hi. You can chat with other Extra Life community members and snag an exclusive Extra Life button (while supplies last). A huge thank you to Bandai Namco who, earlier this month, chose to support Extra Life through Humble Bundle with the Humble Bandai Namco 2 Bundle. Thank you to those who bought the 169,491 bundles and helped to raise $174,000 #ForTheKids. If you love Humble Bundle, you can actually select Extra Life as your charity of choice for all future bundles with one click. International Tabletop Day looms on the horizon. The official day this year is April 29. A substantial number of Extra Lifers have been planning mini-Extra Life marathons that weekend. If you’re planning one, make sure to add yours to the Community Site calendar! In preparation for the Nintendo Switch launch on March 3, we wrote up a primer on everything you need to know about the new console and its games along with some hands-on impressions. Check it all out and let us know your thoughts in the comments! Join us today and help us change the lives of kids across the United States and Canada. We have accomplished so much together and it’s only February, so let’s all keep pushing forward for fun, fellowship, and – as always…. For The Kids!

  7. A bunch of friends and I just found out about this last year and we thought it was good idea. This is my second year doing extra life still trying to figure out how every thing works. My friends and I have decided we had a blast doing Extra Life last year that we want to help out this year. My moms friend introduced it to me and asked if I wanted to be on his team. We are a bit younger group about 10-16. We rose some money for a bunch of teens trying to help over $100. This year my friends and I are going to try and get more involved and try to meet our goal of $800. This year we hope we can be more organised. Last year we started at the end of October and lots of people couldn't come or help out all 24 hours or couldn't even come at all. This year starting really early to get a head start. I'm glad that Extra Life has found a way to raise money with interesting kids to help out as well and many others who like video gaming. I hope we have a great year!!

  15. Hello everyone, my name is Beergnome. I am a 3 year Extra Life veteran and a Twitch streamer here in Salt Lake City. Just got back from TwitchCon and I am all revved up to go. I will be doing a 12 Hour Livestream tomorrow on October 8th to raise funds for Primary Childrens Hospital. This has been my favorite charity to fundraise for and especially for Primary Childrens since I myself had my life saved by the doctors and nurses of that very same hospital years ago. Hopefully some of you can swing by, or at the very least spread the word. https://www.twitch.tv/beergnome1st https://twitter.com/beergnome1st/status/784471755838545920

Ok everyone this is it!!! Time for our yearly 24 hour game stream! We will be hosting the event at Monroe Carrol Jr Children's Hospital, at Vanderbilt. The event will take place in the Waddlington Board rooms (same place where we've been having our meetings, but we will remove the divider wall, to make more room) We will be live streaming, have multiple projectors set up to connect gaming systems. Those who plan on attending can bring their own Consoles/TVs/Board Games/Card Games, etc to the event. Great network to use for online.
  17. until

  21. Hey guys! I thought I would make a thread for hospital news and Miracle Stories. This thread is a great way to stay updated on happenings at the hospital and can be used when recruiting. Stay tuned for my first story.... Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) made history in 1997 when two surgeons pioneered fetal surgery to treat spina bifida, or myelomeningocele, the most common birth defect in the central nervous system. Members of the fetal surgery teams from Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Mater Mother’s Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, pose for a photo during the Vanderbilt team’s recent visit. Almost two decades later, armed with overwhelming evidence from a seven-year study that confirms the effectiveness of the complicated surgery, and with more than 300 cases already performed at Vanderbilt, the institution recently made history again when a team traveled to Australia in July to help launch that country’s first-ever fetal surgery program for spina bifida and guide the first surgery. Read more about how Vanderbilt is taking discoveries around the globe, here.

  24. While many know Humble Bundle for its charity game bundles, they also put together bundles of books in the Humble Book Bundle. This month, titled 'The Joy of Coding,' sixteen books on coding are available. $1+ frees five books, $8+ releases six additional books, and $15+ unlocks the final five books of the bundle. $1+ Tier Automate the Boring Stuff with Python: Practical Programming for Total Beginners by Al Sweigart The Linux Command Line: A Complete Introduction by William E. Shotts, Jr. Learn You A Haskell for Great Good! by Miran Lipovača Learn You Some Erlang for Great Good! by Fred Hébert The Book of F#: Breaking Free with Managed Functional Programming by Dave Fancher $8+ Tier Eloquent JavaScript, 2nd Edition: A Modern Introduction to Programming by Marijn Haverbeke The Principles of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas C. Zakas Land of Lisp: Learn to Program in Lisp, One Game at a Time! by Conrad Barski, M.D. Realm of Racket: Learn to Program, One Game at a Time! by Matthias Felleisen, David Van Horn, Conrad Barski, M.D. If Hemingway Wrote JavaScript by Angus Croll Write Great Code, Volume 1: Understanding the Machine by Randall Hyde $15+ Tier Python Playground: Geeky Projects for the Curious Programmer by Mahesh Venkitachalam Think Like a Programmer: An Introduction to Creative Problem Solving by V. Anton Spraul The Art of R Programming: A Tour of Statistical Software Design by Norman Matloff Clojure for the Brave and True: Learn the Ultimate Language and Become a Better Programmer by Daniel Higginbotham Write Great Code, Volume 2: Thinking Low-Level, Writing High-Level by Randall Hyde By default, the bundle benefits the Electronic Frontier Foundation. However, every Humble Bundle now comes with the option to select the charity of your choice to benefit from what you pay for the bundle. Just click the big Choose Your Own Charity button at the bottom of the bundle's page and search Extra Life to benefit Extra Life with your purchase! This can be done with every Humble Bundle, too. This is a pretty fantastic opportunity for those interested in game development or software design to obtain some learning materials on the cheap. Often coding text books or lesson guides can prove to be expensive, but the Joy of Coding Bundle seems to cover a wide variety of topics in some impressive depth. For the cost of one of these text books, you can both donate to Extra Life and obtain not one, but sixteen textbooks to satisfy your curiosity and further your understanding. Humble Indie Bundle 17 is also in full swing this month! The video game bundle includes: Lethal League, The Beginner's Guide, Galak-Z, Nuclear Throne, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, SUPER TIME FORCE ULTRA, and more before the month is up. As with the book bundle, those interested in the Humble Indie Bundle can select Extra Life as their charity of choice.
