Extra Life 2017 Game Day - Success!

I am STILL dragging from nearly a week ago. Need. More. Coffee. But every minute was worth it. Extra Life weekend (Nov 4-5) brought in over $1.8 million for CMN Hospitals, bringing the overall fundraising total of Extra Life close to $7.8 million as of 11-9-17. We are stunned! Amazed! Honored! That is what we like to call, a success! The donations are STILL coming in too! We know that many of you are playing in the coming weeks, so we have a good feeling about 2017. If you came up short of your goal, no problem! There's still time to collect donations until 12/31/2017. Grab that loot too! Extra Lifers still have time to raise more funds and unlock some cool incentives! The end of Game Day weekend also brought forth the winners of the ESA Foundation Challenge . Congratulations to Seattle Children's Hospital for winning top fundraising hospital, and Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation for winning top hospital per capita! We are so proud of this community. You have really come through once again for the kids at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across the US and Canada. Keep up the good work, we still have plenty of time to play games and heal kids!

  3. Hello Extra Lifers! We love when new folks join us in raising awareness and support for our Children's Miracle Network Hospitals through Extra Life. Sound off! Let us know more about you! Why do you Extra Life? How long have you been participating? What Hospital do you play for and why? Are you a member of one of our Guilds? What do you do when you aren't helping kids? What do you play? PC, Console, handheld? Tabletop? Cosplay/Creative? Something else entirely!?
  4. Hello, I remember in years past you had the choice to choose a name on your dashboard page I believe, instead of a regular participant id and that allowed you to use www.extra-life.org/participant/name. However, the name I used to use and that format does not work anymore, as well, I see nowhere to change this on my dashboard anymore. I know people who can still use their www.extra-life.org/participant/name format and it still works. Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there a place to choose this as in the past? Please help as this makes it easier for people online to go to a pasted URL the shorter and easier it is made like using names instead of numbers. Thank you for your time, efforts, and any help given.

  10. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and the ESA Foundation have been prolific partners with Extra Life from the very beginning! Each year we love announcing this challenge to our Extra Lifers and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and this year is no different! We're thrilled to announce the 2017 ESA Foundation Extra Life Challenge. This is a chance to unlock a huge donation for your local Children's Miracle Network Hospital by doing what you do best; Playing Games to Heal Kids. The Internet simply does not have enough bandwidth for us to fully transmit our gratitude. THANK YOU, ESA FOUNDATION! The ESA Foundation's generous $60,000 grant is divided into two prizes that Extra Lifers can unlock for their hospital by working together to raise all they can for the sick and injured kids that Extra Life supports. Prize #1: Top Overall Fundraising - $30,000 2017 Recipient: Seattle Children's Hospital! ESA Foundation is awarding a $30,000 prize to the hospital whose Extra Lifers raise the most money overall by 9:00am Central Time on Sunday, November 5th.. The total will include only funds raised and received by the deadline (all the more reason to get your offline gifts in early or convert them to digital donations). Last year, the San Francisco-Oakland market took home the funds! Okay, but what if YOUR town is not as big as the top dogs on this list? The ESA Foundation has a SECOND prize to recognize the needs of smaller hospitals and the kids they serve. Prize #2: top Fundraising Per Capita - $30,000 2017 Recipient: Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation Using census data for the areas served by our hospitals, an additional award of $30,000 will be unlocked for the hospital with the highest per capita fundraising. To compute per capita we divide the population of the area by the dollars raised for that hospital. The hospital with the highest per capita amount at 9:00 am Central Time on Sunday, November 5th will win. Again, only funds that are raised and received by this time will be counted towards this figure. Note: A hospital can only unlock one award, even if they are the highest for both the overall fundraising and top fundraising per capita. In the event that this happens, the hospital will unlock the overall fundraising grant and the next highest per capita fundraising hospital will unlock that grant. Last year, UVM Children's Hospital in Vermont edged out the competition to win! Working with the ESA and the ESA Foundation continues to make Extra Life and our communities stronger! Now get fundraising and unlock these major achievements! View full article

  12. Earlier this year, Wizards of the Coast launched the most ambitious addition to Dungeons and Dragons in years. The prolific game company introduced D&D Beyond back in March as a beta for hardcore players of the traditional tabletop role-playing game. The beta period came to an end at the beginning of September, launching to a positive reception. I've had a chance to play around with the materials and systems the past few weeks, and Beyond might just be the most useful, mainstream tool a modern D&D role-playing group could use. D&D Beyond takes on all of the tasks previously reserved for bulky books and easily misplaced character sheets. The streamlined approach means that any player can access a roster of their created characters online while also having access to the basic rules and systems needed to run a game of 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons for free. Players who want any of the content contained within adventure modules, expansions, and supplements can purchase those on the digital marketplace for use online in D&D Beyond. That might seem a bit standard, however D&D Beyond offers a really intriguing idea: A two tiered subscription model. Anyone can use Beyond for free, but they will be limited to six characters on their account, the occasional ad will appear, and homebrew content from others cannot be added to a given campaign. The Hero tier for $2.99 per month allows for unlimited characters, no ads, and allows for all homebrew content. Most interestingly, the Master tier for $5.99 per month brings in all of the access of lower tiers, but also allows Dungeon Masters to share all of the purchased content they have with everyone in up to three campaigns. You can feasibly join a D&D Beyond campaign, create a character, and immediately have access to everything your DM will be using in the upcoming adventure - for free. That means, in theory, that a group could pitch in to collectively buy a book apiece and have collective access to the entire 5th edition library. This feature has been one that fans of the staple pen and paper RPG have been awaiting for a long, long time. There are numerous online tools that players have used to help in character creation, organize player-created expansions, and keep track of campaigns. D&D Beyond puts all of those tools into one place and offers that aforementioned game sharing ability. Nathan Stewart, the senior director of Dungeons & Dragons, stated in the announcement for D&D Beyond's beta phase that, "D&D Beyond speaks to the way gamers are able to blend digital tools with the fun of storytelling around the table with your friends. These tools represent a way forward for D&D, and we’re excited to get them into the hands of players." The ideal experience of D&D Beyond resides on PC. Going to the website with a full keyboard makes finding what you need and adjusting numbers on a character sheet a cinch. Currently Wizards of the Coast plans to bring the service to a dedicated app for tablets and smart phones. In the meantime, players can use the mobile version of the D&D Beyond website, which offers most of the same functionality as the desktop website. Accessibility stands as the main downside of the mobile version. Often it can take a few clunky finger taps to navigate to the page you need. Weighed against the previous state of the game, where it could take someone several minutes of page turning through rule books and modules, the mobile site offers a vast improvement. The mobile app represents an opportunity for Wizards of the Coast and their development partners at Curse to refine the Beyond experience into a finely tuned collection of role-playing tools. As it stands, one of the main strengths of the Beyond platform is how easy and readily understandable it makes creating a character for even the most uninitiated. It automatically handles the heavy lifting of putting values and adding bonuses derived from the player's choice of creature and class for their character. The only hitch in the character creation process might be when it comes to figuring out starting equipment. That process seems to be complicated for beginners and possibly frustrating the first few times through for those more accustomed to pen and paper. However, there are options to create randomized characters or characters at level 1 that's properly geared for their class. Players who want to create new content in D&D Beyond are free to do so. Want to create a new spell, item, or monster? There are ways to do that and share them with your fellow adventurers. Those creations do have to adhere to some guidelines that prohibit the use of licensed content in homebrew additions. You can't make an item that gives out someone's personal information, contains hate speech in the description, or is very obviously from another IP like directly inserting The One Ring from Lord of the Rings. Wizards of the Coast also prohibits players from adding content that builds off of other races or creatures mentioned in the already established lore of their worlds. Overall, D&D Beyond might have a couple flaws or kinks in the system, but it's an incredibly solid foundation that Wizards of the Coast will most definitely be refining over the coming years. It's a great way to ensure players keep coming back to get hooked on new modules and expansions. Sure, you might have played through a whole campaign as a skilled human swordsman, but what would your adventures be like if you had created a Tortle barbarian? Beyond makes it easy to experiment with new characters and discover new adventures. Oh, and that Tortle race that can be used in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition? It was created as a supplement to the Tomb of Annihilation adventure to raise money for Extra Life! All proceeds from the sale of The Tortle Package go to Extra Life - so, if you're looking for a D&D one-shot to run on Game Day, think about grabbing a few friends, hopping on D&D Beyond, and crafting your own adventure in the isolated Snout of Omgar.

    Best Practices: Extra Life: Explained

Wha t is Extra Life? Extra Life, a fundraising program of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, leverages the passion of the gaming community to rally support for our 170 member hospitals. Participants fundraise year-round and pledge to game for 24 hours with one goal: to save and improve the lives of sick and injured kids. Since 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $40 million for member hospitals. https://youtu.be/D7kfCS0ruhc How to participate Sign up: Pledge to play games from your home or online. Play during the 24-hour marathon (Nov 4th) or on any day that works for you! Fundraise & Recruit: Ask your family and friends to donate to your fundraising. Create a team and recruit others to join you! Play games, heal kids: Raise funds, have fun, and help heal kids at your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital! Why support Extra Life and CMN Hospitals? More than 10 million kids enter Children's Miracle Network Hospital across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care. Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped fill those funding gaps by raising more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through Miracle Balloon icon campaigns. Extra Life is among various programs that support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Getting Started •Customize your participant page •Utilize the team captain tools in the Extra Life Dashboard •Use the Extra Life Mobile Fundraising Apps •Make a plan for Game Day •Send a dedicated e-blast •Share (and share often) on your social media channels •Write a blog post Have a question? Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped fill those funding gaps by raising more than $5 billion, most of it $1 at a time through Miracle Balloon icon campaigns. Extra Life is among various programs that support the nonprofit’s mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Introductory Board Games

Sometimes the people you talk to think that the only board games that exist are Monopoly, Sorry, and Trouble. Because of this, it can be hard to get people interested in board games. I've been lucky enough to work with people who have relatively large game collections, so we've found games that work for our group. We've also tried getting other coworkers interested in gaming with us. A good way to do that is to start off with some quicker, lighter games. Since we typically play at work, the only real time we have is our lunch break. We're blessed with a full hour, but we still try to find games that can be played in 30-45 minutes. That gives us time to get food, eat, set up the game, play it, and then tear it down. Sometimes, the games are short enough that we can play multiple rounds. Here are some (quick) games that I'd recommend to get others interested in games even when you don't have much time: Celestia A fairly simple push-your-luck game. The premise is that you're going through a series of adventures and the more fulfilling (read: longer) your adventure, the more points you can get. Everyone gets to take a shot at being captain and passenger, and it's a good time all around. Codnames / Codenames: Pictures Another simple game where you can work in teams. Each team has a Code Master that is trying to get them to guess the correct cards and reveal all of their agents. The Code Master is only allowed to give a one-word clue followed by a number, which is the number of cards that the clue can point to. The first team to correctly guess the location of all of their agents without accidentally picking the Assassin wins. Saboteur / Saboteur 2 This game is one of my favorites. Everyone is a mining dwarf trying to get to some hidden gold. There are also some Saboteurs in your midst that are trying to prevent you from reaching that very gold. Everyone plays a card, then draws a card, ideally building a path to the other side of the board. I highly recommend picking up Saboteur 2, which is actually an expansion, because it adds teams and several new roles. Good Cop, Bad Cop Everyone in this game is either an Honest cop or a Crooked cop. Two players are the Agent and Kingpin respectively. This is a deduction game where players are trying to find and kill either the Agent or Kingpin, depending on your allegiance. The game gets fun when either one is found and suddenly cards come out to alter the allegiance of the other players. I recommend picking up the Undercover expansion as well. BANG! One person is the Sheriff, several players are Deputies, one person is a Renegade, and several people are Outlaws. Another deduction game that we love to play. This game involves shooting first and asking questions later while you try and figure out who is on your team. The Sheriff and Deputies are trying to get rid of the Outlaws, the Outlaws are trying to get rid of the Sheriff, and the Renegade is trying to get rid of everyone except the Sheriff until the very end. Tsuro / Tsuro of the Seas This is a very casual board game. Everyone has their own piece and all you do is play a card and follow the path. The goal is to stay on the board as long as possible. If you run off the edge of the board or crash into another player, you're out. Love Letter / Love Letter Premium This is a personal favorite. The idea is that you're trying to get your letter to the princess by having it passed along through the many people she interacts with. Each card has a special ability such as making you immune to other effects for the round or comparing your hand to another player's hand. If two (or more) players are left when the deck runs out, the player with the highest value card in their hand wins. I recommend the Premium edition because it adds support for four more players and adds a lot of exciting new cards. Mascarade This is another deduction game, but it's not quite the same as games like The Resistance or Werewolf. Everyone has a card that has an ability on it. Throughout the game, you will be swapping cards with other players and trying to keep track of who has what ability. Some abilities give you gold, while others let you add some chaos by moving other cards around. The first person to 13 gold wins. Spyfall / Spyfall 2 Spyfall is a good game if you're looking for something you can play in 5-10 minutes. A bag of cards is picked, and all but one of the cards in that bag has a location (each card has the same location) as well as a role on it. For example, you might have a set of cards that say Bank and one of the roles could be Banker or Thief. You go around asking each other questions, but you don't want to give too much information away. Ideally, you get answers that let you know who else knows where everyone is located. If the Spy, who does not have the location on their card, figures out the location, they win.
