  1. Dragon Age has been one of the biggest western RPG franchises to emerge in recent years. Since its debut in Dragon Age: Origins, which we previously covered on this show, the series has continued to grow under BioWare's direction. While there are now three games in the series, Dragon Age II has widely been considered the odd duck of the trilogy. With a rushed production resulting in reused environments, many wrote it off at the time as lazy or too repetitive. However, could Dragon Age II actually be one of the best games of all-time? To help answer this question, we turn to Dragon Age expert and all around swell writer/streamer/podcaster Ginny Woo!   3. If you've ever played a BioWare game, chances are you've played through a game written or designed by David Gaider. Gaider worked at BioWare for over a decade writing games, novels, and comic books for the company. He cut his teeth writing and designing for Baldur's Gate II and went on to play a major part in the creation of Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and then wrote and conceived the fictional world of every single Dragon Age game. With that pedigree, Gaider definitely possesses a familiarity with the minds of the various characters spread throughout Dragon Age. One of the biggest components of the fandom surrounding BioWare's modern juggernauts remains the shippers; people who become very invested in the fictional romances around the various companion characters the developer brings to life with so much care and attention to detail. After a Mass Effect or a Dragon Age releases, fans construct their own headcanons or write fanfiction, but the original creator always reigns supreme. To that end, one of Dragon Age's fans asked Gaider, who is no longer a works at BioWare, what Valentine's Day dates would look like in Dragon Age. Gaider's response was an absolutely adorable and cute gift to the Dragon Age fandom. You can read the highlights of his date descriptions below: Alistair's would probably start off as something which seems lame - like he takes you bowling. Then you realize he's rented the entire place, because he remembered your anniversary, and has it all set up with candles so he can clumsily serenade you while blushing the entire time. Fenris's dream date would probably involve raiding a magister's Tevinter mansion, and then - excited like a schoolboy - he demonstrates his latest choreography for you amidst the ruins. Plus, he brought wine. Dorian's dream date would be some elaborate extravaganza which you both decide to ditch halfway through to head down to the worst dive in the city. There you end up in a big fight with sailors. Who you then drink shots with after the fight's over until you all pass out. Zevran's dream date would involve him taking you on a tour of Antiva while he plays a mandolin. All the locals seem to know him and bring out cakes and other delightful treats. Eventually it turns out to be the lead-up to an assassination. After the fight, he apologizes with sex. Cassandra's date is taking you to a play of Varric's first novel. Her delight is palpable. You arranged to have her dragged on stage to play a character... at first she protests , but then plays the part perfectly. After, you walk along the pier while she talks about her dreams. Morrigan's dream date is taking you to break into a tomb full of musty tomes. You read passages to each other while she laughs at your interpretations of the text. As you're leaving, she suddenly remembers to tell you she had a lovely time. You're not allowed to call it a date. I'm pretty sure Shale's dream date would be going to a clay pigeon factory. The two of you would destroy larger and larger batches of clay pigeons. Between batches Shales would laugh and maybe dance a little jig. There you have it! If your favorite character didn't have a described date, you'll have to hope a different BioWare writer tackles the characters that they wrote throughout the series' history. BioWare had made their mark on the age of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with the sci-fi RPG, but where could the series go from where they left it? A galaxy in shambles, the central protagonist's story done, and the weight of expectations made a direct follow-up all but impossible. However, BioWare went ahead and made one anyway. After an immensely troubled development period, the world was introduced to a brand new galaxy in Mass Effect: Andromeda!... which was immediately dogpiled under the crushing weight of criticism of its odd animations, dilapidated structure, and flat story.   9. Anthem's lead designers, including Bioware General Manager Casey Hudson, took the stage to dissect Anthem. On top of showing off more of the gameplay, the studio revealed the game's early 2019 release date. Bioware reinforced the "living" element of the game's shared open world. The world constantly changes, and events such as dramatic weather storms occur at the same time for all players. Despite the multiplayer premise, Bioware stressed that delivering a rich narrative is the primary focus. To achieve this vision, safe havens across the world of Anthem will serve as a kind of instanced hub where the decisions players make cause changes and growth unique to each player's game. On the subject of story, Anthem take place on a world left unfinished by the gods that shaped it. For unknown reasons, the gods abandoned powerful, world changing tools, some still active, leaving them scattered across the planet. These godly objects and their functions cause discord in the force called the Anthem of Creation. Since the world is incomplete and in dissonance, it has fallen victim to an array of violent storms and is inhabited by monsters. Thus, Freelancers, the pilots behind the Iron Man-esque suits, called Javelins, wear their armor to survive the harsh environment. Javelin's are also a necessity for battling malevolent forces that seek to weaponize the forces shaping the world. These were only hinted at briefly during EA's presentation, but we know they're called The Dominion. The conflict of the story seems to be based on the forces of The Dominion having discovered a way to weaponize the Anthem of Creation. Which... seems bad? We'll have to wait to find out more! Javelins come in four classes. Rangers, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm. Each have their own special traits and players aren't tied to a single class. Depending on the situation, Anthem allows players to choose the best suit for the job. This also allows flexible strategy in deciding squad make-ups. Javelins can be customized with various colors and patterns, letting player create a look that suits them or their squad. Cosmetic items will be for sale (presumably costing real money), but Anthem contains no loot boxes and players won't be "able to purchase power" according to Bioware. Up to four players can taken on Anthem cooperatively, but the game can be experienced entirely solo. However, Bioware warns that Anthem's dangers become tougher for those who face them alone. Pre-orders are now open. Players who jump in early receive a VIP demo access and an in-game Founders Banner. Pre-ordering the standard version unlocks a legendary weapon the Legion of Dawn armor for the Ranger Javelin. Those that spring for the Legion of Dawn Edition receive the titular armor packs, a gear attachment for the Ranger, and digital soundtrack among other extras. Look for Anthem on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin.

Hailed as "The Oregon Trail, but with fighting and a Norse apocalypse," The Banner Saga went on to generate a sequel as well as a third installment that recently found success on Kickstarter. The high-stakes, turn-based RPG took players on a journey through a hand-painted world full of mystery and intrigue, where it felt like one wrong move could unravel tenuous alliances or get people killed. With schedules being what they are, sometimes coordinating a full episode of The Best Games Period can be difficult.   13. EA has once again opened up the Vaults of EA and Origin Access, subscription services that gives members access to "free" games from the publisher's portfolio, among other perks. Headlining the pack of newcomers is Mass Effect Andromeda, which launched earlier this year to a polarizing reception. Members will also be able to play EA's biggest holiday titles ahead of launch, including Star Wars Battlefront II. Beginning this month until December, the following titles will be added to the Vault.   17. BioWare announced a partnership with the Edmonton Corn Maze yesterday to create a labyrinth themed around the game developer and its upcoming action-RPG Anthem. The maze features the BioWare logo and a figure from the game plowed into a 17-acre field, and it is currently open to the public. The RPG developer had a bit of fun with the announcement. Anthem's director, Jon Warner, put out a statement that reads, "It’s a world where you can become lost with your friends, sort of like getting lost in this maze. I mean, what better way to celebrate the growth of our new game than through corn, which also grows? [...] This has been an a-MAZE-ing opportunity for us." The company also released a trailer for the maize -erm- maze that's pretty spectacular. The Edmonton Corn Maze is open from July 24-October 24. "It's no secret that we're doing something with Dragon Age," said Mike Laidlaw aka the Senior Creative Director for Dragon Age during a podcast called The 1099. He continued on to say, "I can't talk about what, but we're certainly involved in something." Laidlaw was a guest on the podcast and the topics were creating "massive open worlds," his career and, of course, Dragon Age. "As I've jokingly said, I am the creative director for the Dragon Age franchise and they haven't fired me yet," said Laidlaw hinting at the viability of the next Dragon Age game.   23. Bioware joined Microsoft at their E3 presentation for the first extensive showing of their new franchise "Anthem." Players operate as "freelancers" in a science fiction universe, living within the walls of Fort Tarsis. Freelancers are the only people brave and capable enough of leaving the fortress, donning robotic power suits with their own unique loadouts and capabilities. The demo began with a character begging the player to rescue a group of non-freelancers who took a job offer outside the walls. After donning the ranger power armor (a mid-range class with all-around effectiveness), the player is joined by a friend with a "colossus" class suit with heavy attack power. It's unclear if Anthem is completely open world, but once outside of Fort Tarsis, the player seems to be able to move about in any direction through a lush jungle filled with wildlife both large and small. After fleeing a high level creature, the two players split up to take on a small group of scavenger enemies. The player character jets down beneath the surface of a river to breach and surprise the enemy at close range. Anthem will definitely be attempting its own system of rewarding players with loot. After ambushing a large group of enemies and taking them out with a volley of heat-seeking mortar and missile fire, the player picks up a legendary volt rife called "Jarra's Wrath." It's certainly as nonsensical in naming its items as Destiny. Anthem also features weather events that ostensibly change how you tackle objectives, including Shaper Storms. Before the demo concludes, the player character is able to invite at least two more friends to their squad for backup, before flying into a mysterious orb shrouded by the storm. Destiny 2 will have at least a little while to bulk up its defense, though, since Anthem is currently scheduled for a Fall 2018 release. What did you folks think of the demo?   25. BioWare, for the time being, is setting aside Dragon Age and Mass Effect in favor of a new franchise titled Anthem. BioWare debuted a new teaser trailer ahead of the full trailer scheduled to be unveiled during Microsoft’s E3 press event. The trailer features a mysterious planet full of lush jungles, terrifying beasts, and a suit of powered armor that looks like it could be the Doom marine’s cousin.
