The Nashville Guild - A Real Boy (Social Media)

Hi all, I think there may have been a misunderstanding. All guild related activity should be handled here, on this site. We took the decision this year to forego new guilds a social media presence intentionally. It was a decision we came to after seeing the results of several years' worth of work and what was and was not working to help us fulfil the mission; recruitment. This isn't a question of choosing "@Sapience vs @Doc". It's how we've structured the program as a team. I appreciate your cooperation and I know that working with Rick, who is responsible for all things Guild related here at Extra Life/CMN Hospitals, and your new guild president as well as Kelsey-Lane at your hospital that you'll have tremendous success in Nashville this year. It might help you to know that several guilds, who have had a social presence while we tested and grew the program have voluntarily abandoned them in favor of the community site. We'll be talking more to existing guilds about how to finalize their moves as well. This is something we've considered very carefully. I apologize if I miscommunicated anything that caused this confusion, and hope we're all on the same page now. Thanks for all you do for the kids! Doc
  2. Over the weekend, your Extra Life 2015 fundraising efforts passed a huge milestone in record time with our $2-Millionth dollar raised for sick and injured local kids. At this time last year, we had raised just over $1M For The Kids. It makes me so proud to be a part of this growing community of do-good-gamers. I know that we won't let our early success put us into cruise control as we head into these last few weeks leading up to Game Day. Let's keep up the pressure, let's keep bringing new friends and family members into the community, and let's turn in a miraculous total for the deserving families that benefit from our good work. Thank you to everyone that's put it all on the line this year. Welcome to anyone that's just discovering that, as a gamer, you can have a huge impact for kids in your community. Last year this community went on to crack the $6M mark. It seems even greater things are on the horizon. Incredible, generous work, team. Doc

  13. UPDATE: The Save the Date announcement can be found here: http://community.extra-life.org/united Hi everyone! An official SAVE THE DATE announcement is going live soon. For the 65 folks that attended last year, you will notice a few differences this year that I want to highlight now, prior to the big announcement. Last year, a major portion of your ticket price was underwritten by Twitch. The true cost of attendance for each person was somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 per person. This year we're doing things a bit differently. When announced your ticket will cover only event admission and a few meals and snacks during the event. Breakfasts and Dinners, Hotel, and Park Admission will be up to you to decide on. This way we're not forcing everyone to eat at Disney Prices or to pay for park tickets they might not use. This way, you can bunk up together on property and split costs, or find a local low-cost option that allows you quick access to Coronado Springs. Also different this year will be the way the whole tournament works. Rather than risking coming down and being "out" in an elimination bracket, numerous events will be held throughout ELU. and losing one doesn't keep you from participating in the next one. Speaking of events, the third major change to this year is the addition of "Tracks". When registration opens you'll be asked to choose a track. There will be three participant tracks and one volunteer track. Participant Tracks will be Video Games (Console-Style), Video Games (PC-Style), and an exciting addition TableTop. The Volunteer Track, Tori's Angels, will be for folks who want to attend but don't want to compete in the various events. Think PAX Enforcers or Rooster Teeth Guardians. While the number of people allowed into the participant tracks will be your choice, we only need about 10 Tori's Angels to pull off the event, and the number of those will be limited when registration opens. Watch your inbox and this forum for updates. We expect to unleash a far-more detail-laden post at that time. As a reminder ELU 2016 is February 23-26 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando. You heard it here first!
  14. Hello Guildies far and wide! We're just two months away from Game Day on November 7th. It's coming up so fast! While many of you have been pounding the pavement all year long, it is in these last crucial months that we see the biggest impact for the kids we serve. I wanted to drop you a quick note to expand upon some things I shared in the Guild Leadership group a week or more ago. The actions that we take, and the focus that we share will make all of the difference over the next 50ish days. As the Guild program has grown from 4 to 54 in just two short years, we've learned a ton. We've learned what really moves the needle for the hospitals we're doing this for. We've learned through our W's and our L's that there are things that make a difference, and things that seem cool but don't. We've also learned that supporting 54 Guilds is a very different animal from supporting 4. To make this possible, we've had to outline many of these best practices, leadership structure, and branding guidelines that ensure that we're all on the same page and all putting our best feet forward. The manifestation of this is our Guild Handbook. Now in its 2nd edition, the Guild Handbook serves as a framework upon which every guild must be built. It talks about what a guild is, what it isn't, and it helps cope with loads of everyday opportunities and challenges faced by our heroic guildies. While Guild leaders from all over the country were consulted and contributed their ideas and experiences to this handbook, every active guildie ought to take a moment to read it, and make sure they understand it. We can't succeed as a team without having this core nucleus to bind us all together. If you suspect your Guild is operating outside of the basics, it probably is. If it is, now is the time to get everything in order and get your team focused... on recruitment. The Extra Life Guilds are the recruitment station of the program. They exist to help save kids lives creating awareness of the program, and enlisting new Extra Lifers in their local community. Guilds aren't standing in intersections with buckets to collect change or holding bake sales. The time and place for that is within your personal Extra Life fundraising environment or your personal Extra Life team. Guilds recruit.... and right now we really need you on that front. Extra Life participation nearly doubles in the final months. Why? Because the date is close enough that people start listening. It's coming up soon enough that it's not the far away land of November, but just around the corner. Urgency drives action. The same holds true with our Guilds. From here to game day, as a Guild, please remain focused on recruitment. As a person, you're welcome and encouraged to come up with any wacky idea or big fundraiser for your hospital. But when you're wearing your Guildie hat we're all-recruitment, all-the-time. (Speaking of which we really need hats) If you are a Guild Leader, now is the time that your mettle will be truly tested. You have a huge responsibility to your Guild to keep them goal-focused, informed, and moving in concert. For some of you, this may be more than you signed up for. Guess what.... that's okay. But we need to hear that from you so that we can help find new leadership. If you don't tell us that you're overwhelmed, we can't possibly know. Often an email or phone call with our Community Manager, Rick Heaton (Sapience) can help find where you're stuck and can get you headed in the right direction. But you have to reach out. The mission that we're on is too important. The kids we serve deserve the best from every one of us. The Guilds are the front lines. There are no more involved, compassionate, or determined a group within the Extra Life than you. One final bit of housekeeping that is very important. Several weeks ago we asked all leadership to submit a roster of their leadership team, complete with email addresses. There are still 20+ Guilds that have not sent that in to Rick. Please take 5 minutes to jot that down and send it to rheaton@cmnhospitals.org . Please please get this done now. This is it folks. The countdown clock just started it ain't stopping for anyone or anything. For The Kids, let's all commit to up our game and pull together to deliver the biggest result ever. Thank you for your weekends, your evenings, your heart and your soul. I promise you that the families that will benefit from your good work are both grateful and worth it. I truly love you, Guildies. In gratitude... Doc
  15. We don't always get what we ask for, but we're guranteed to never get things we don't ask for. Yes that's confusing, but its also true. But a lot of Extra Lifers aren't sure where to begin asking for donations, or they make a few social media posts, see no return, and just give up. Well why don't we just fix that right now with 10 things you can do to raise more for the kids with Extra Life! Here we go! Use your fundraising page to send emails Within minutes you can talk to everyone you know, see who answers and donates, send thank you messages, and much more. If you aren’t using the email tools you’re missing out on an excellent fundraising opportunity. Connect your page with social media As part of your setup process, we strongly recommend that you connect your social media accounts with your Extra Life account. This will help you spread the word, ask for donations, and rally your online friends to the cause. Your friends want to help you succeed, and this is an easy way to keep them up-to-date on your progress! Update Early! Update Often! It simply isn’t enough to make a tweet or a facebook post a couple of times and to think that you’ve asked everyone. Most tweets go unread, and I don’t think anyone fully understands how Facebook decides which of your friends get to see things. Plus it usually takes someone seeing your appeal up to 3 times before they’ll even notice it. Jason West, a leading Extra Lifer who plays for Children’s Hospital of Boston and his wife Maria post DAILY, and keep the kids they’re playing for top-of mind for everyone in their reach. Keep it fresh and keep it going. Tell local businesses you mean business! As a human being on this planet, you are basically required to spend money on things. From your doctor’s office to the coffee shop where you get your fix each morning to the dry cleaners, there are people who are grateful for your business, and will be honored to be asked to support your efforts for local kids. Be sure that you tag them in posts and tell everyone you know in your area when they do! Hold a % of the proceeds night Much like my last suggestion, local businesses make their name on what they can do for the local community. Why not ask one to hold a night where a percentage of proceeds go to Extra Life (through you of course). Then just get out there and drive your neighbors and friends in for that night. Have others sign the shirt you'll be wearing for a donation Here’s a fun one. Find a shirt that you’re okay sacrificing, and declare it your game day shirt. Tell everyone this is the shirt you will wear on game day, and for a donation of XX dollars they can sign it any way they want to. Be prepared for a pile of donations and possibly for some suggestive arrows and circles. Hey it’s for the kids! Bake, knit, craft! Lots of Extra Lifers have done this one with great success. Brian in Pittsburgh made some brownies, slapped some Extra Life stickers on them, put them out in his break room with a sign asking people to leave a donation for a brownie, and later disvoered he’d turned about $4 in flour into about $30 for the kids. Now THAT’S a sweet return! Can you craft? Can you knit? Can you groom pets? Use your talents to unlock more donations! You're never too old for odd jobs This one goes without saying. Send an email to your local friends telling them you’d like to come by and wash their car or clean their gutters (be safe!) in return for a donation of their choosing to your Extra Life effort. You’ll be surprised by how far above and beyond people will go to help you reach your goal, especially when it’s all going to stay local for local kids. Say-what-I'll-play This is another popular tactic used by Extra Lifers, especially those that stream their play. Tell your potential supporters that for X donation you’ll play whatever game they want, even My Little Pony Adventures. Be prepared for some serious generosity, and some serious humiliation when they take you up on this. Destructoid’s Jim Sterling did something like this a few years ago where supporters paid to make him sing various ditties in SingStar. 12 hours into it Jim’s voice gave out, but not before he’d raised THOUSANDS of dollars for the kids! The most important tip You might not get everything you ask for, this is true, but you will for certain not get 100% of what you don’t ask for. You have to ask, it’s part of being an Extra Lifer. We put ourselves out there and some people will ignore us, but if we ask enough we make miracles. Our kids can’t quit their fights any more than you can quit asking. View full article
