Hello all, I've been video gaming for over nearly thirty years, collecting games and systems long the way: everything from classics like 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis, to more obscure systems like Virtual Boy, Pong clones, and the Astrocade. I've also been recently getting into tabletop gaming. While I've known about Extra Life for a few years now, this is the first time I'm trying to get involved. I'm also looking for some advice on running a large-scale event. I work at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (you may know us from the Mütter Museum), and I am exploring the possibility of hosting an EL event at the College. We have tons of event space and I am eager to fill those spaces with games, all the better if it is for a good cause. I just wanted to get some advice/tips about hosting an event. I'm sure many people do them on their own or with groups of friends but have any of you host any kind of large-scale event? I'm excited to be a part of the cause. Even if I don't host something for work, I'd like to do something on my own.

We definitely appreciate the cautious attitude and questions. Regarding how Extra Life functions, it is as we say, the hospital sees the entirety of the donations made to it's participants. The amount of the donation made to an Extra Life participant is always made to the hospital that they support! The fee is not deducted from the donation, but covered by Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The $19 fee to upgrade your account helps offset the cost of the actual incentives you receive when you reach fundraising milestones (t-shirt, sticker, medals, etc). If you have any further questions or concerns your can see our financial information here: https://childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org/financials/ or send inquiries to support@cmnhospitals.org!

Play Games. Heal Kids. Now to be perfectly clear, just playing games isn’t what is going to help the kids treated at your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. It’s telling your friends, family, coworkers and other community members about what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and then asking them to make a donation to your fundraising page in support of your efforts. Here are some tips & tricks to help you get started: Fundraising Tips & Tricks 1. Personalize your Extra Life Fundraising Page 2. Use the Extra Life Email Portal to ask for donations 3. Victoria Enmon was an amazing little girl. She demonstrated love and compassion to others around her as much as she possibly could. Whether being thrown into the air at cheer leading practice or battling cancer, she never stopped supporting the people whose lives she touched. In the words of her parents, Vic and Jo Ellen Enmon, she flew. Today would have been Victoria's 27th birthday. "She wasn't afraid of heights. In fact, she wasn't really afraid of anything." - Jo Ellen Enmon At a little over 11 years old, Victoria was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and it would be something she fought for the rest of her life. While she battled her condition, undergoing multiple transplants and treatments, she never let it break her spirits. Even while sick, Extra Life's founder, Jeromy "Doc" Adams recalls her as "the kind of kid you could hear coming before long before she got to your soundproof studio." It also never stopped her from giving all of herself over to helping people without hesitation. At Camp Periwinkle, a summer camp for children with cancer, one of her doctors holds onto the memory of her helping another girl suffering from both cystic fibrosis and cancer. That little girl needed extra help to get ready to experience camp each day, and throughout that week Victoria came to help. Victoria made sure that her fellow camper would get to have an unforgettable camp experience. No one asked her to, she just did it. As she entered what would be her final stay in a hospital, Jeromy Adams began working with Sarcastic Gamer to get her some games to help her pass the time during her treatments. The overwhelming response consisted of more games than her family could handle. Of course, Victoria started giving them away to other kids in the hospital. That impulse to give everything to those around her, that was just the kind of person she was. "You know, here she is, lying up in bed tubes connected to her. She didn't go and cry about it or bemoan her situation. She went around to all these other kids to make them feel better. I think that's really the legacy of her." - Vic Enmon From 11 years old until 15 years old, Victoria never stopped fighting, not even when she contracted a fungal infection due to her compromised immune system. She passed away on January 21, 2008, finally resting from her battle against leukemia, failed transplants, and infections. But that's not the end of her story. To keep her spirit alive and make sure that everyone knows how amazing she was, Jeromy Adams started Extra Life that same year. On october 13, 2008, over 1,200 people showed up to support children like Victoria. It has grown every year since and has now raised over $50 million to help sick and injured kids across the United States and Canada. One of Victoria's last wishes was to see Christmas lights. The final time he saw her, Victoria, her parents, and Jeromy all stepped outside to see the lights glow in the dark. "We were only outside for about 10 minutes. There wasn't a lot of talking. We just looked at lights," Jeromy remembers. Victoria isn't gone. She's become like those lights, shining brightly in the dark, touching more lives with comfort and love with each passing year. She's able to do that through all of us working to keep that fearless and caring spirit alive. Happy birthday Victoria. We're doing our best. For The Kids

I joined Extra Life 3 years ago on a whim just to see if I could do the 24 hour gaming challenge. After that game day I got a message to join the local guild. I did that and from there found the twitch side of EL. I applied to become a mod and have met so many incredible people and have accomplished alot. It's done wonders for my mental health alone. But then last november I learned about Maddox. Maddox was a local teenager who had terminal cancer and wanted to do his own "game day stream" to help raise money. His goal was to be remembered as a champion and not just another kid with cancer. I, with the help of guild president Richard Moser (Yinz all know him, haha), got him up and running on Twitch. Along with the help of several other Extra-Lifers we were able to help Maddox raise over $16k, a record for our hospital. On my game day I had a donation incentive to get an Extra Life tattoo. Mid January Maddox bravely lost his fight and I knew what I wanted my tattoo to be. Maddox is why I Extra Life now. His Twitch name was MadGhost0821. AshleyAwoww, a stream team member, was the one who drew this up and I just got it on Friday.

Hey everyone! I just released a new version that allows you to do a test donation alert so you can see how it will look / sound in your stream when you're setting things up. In the new ExtraLifeHelper.html file, change the new testDonationSeconds value to something other than zero. When the Helper loads up, it will show a test donation that many seconds later. Don't forget to set it back to zero when you're done testing. Latest version is v2.2. and can be downloaded here: https://github.com/breadweb/extralifehelper @MaelstromALPHA, this is something you and others requested.

Hi everyone! The Extra Life Helper has been updated to work with the new Extra Life API. You won't notice a change as it is all under the hood. With that said, everyone needs to upgrade by July 16th before the old API is sunset. Previous versions of the Helper will stop working at that time. Here's the direct download. Please let me know if you have any questions or need any help. https://github.com/breadweb/extralifehelper/releases/download/2.1/ExtraLifeHelper-v2.1.zip

Hey everyone! It’s Lizzy, your friendly neighborhood volunteer coordinator for the 2018 Extra Life fundraising season! As we quickly approach May, we are about to jump into our first major event which means we need your help supporting the Extra Life booth at Momocon 2018: Thursday, May 24 through Sunday, May 27. As before, those who volunteer to work a shift (no more than 5 hours max per shift), will receive a free full 4-day badge to the event so that you can experience all the Con has to offer when you are not manning the Extra Life booth. That includes access to all areas of the event including: Gaming Hall, Expo Hall, Main and sub stages, panels, classes and much more!! The only extra cost is for lodging, meals, souvenirs, and the Open World: Video Game Music concert. Just as last year, rather than just a table in the general organizations area, we are now part of the official MomoCon Charity Row section, complete with our own 10' x 10' booth!! We've got some great plans for the space, and I will be sharing those as we get closer to the event. We will be hosting a small meet and greet gathering the weekend prior to MomoCon where you can not only meet this year’s leadership team for the Atlanta Extra Life Guild, but also get some handy tips and tricks for volunteering as well as pick up your weekend badges. More detailed information regarding the meet and greet will be coming out shortly. If you are interested in volunteering, please click the link below to access the sign-up sheet. Please fill in as much info as possible so we have a way to contact you prior and during the event. Also, this is a first come first served event, and we have a limited number of passes available (16), so if you are interested you should sign up sooner rather than later! I will be onsite on and off throughout the event and always will be reachable by phone. I am super excited to meet you all and work with you throughout the year to make 2018 our best year ever #ForTheKids! Harebrained Schemes, the studio behind the digital revival of Shadowrun as a turn-based strategy RPG, has returned, and this time they aim to revitalize mechanized turn-based strategy with Battletech. The company touts the project as "the first turn-based tactical mech combat PC game in over 20 years" which seems like a bit of a stretch, but Harebrained Schemes' track record with turn-based strategy is reason alone to get excited. Battletech casts players as the leader of a mercenary company that uses mechs to wage battles for whoever has money. Out on the edges of civilization, players will have to negotiate contracts for their crew, keep everyone alive, and also put a dethroned monarch back onto her galactic throne. Harebrained Schemes began working on Battletech after a successful Kickstarter raised well over its $250,000 goal to raise almost $2.8 million. The studio has a history of vastly successful crowdfunding campaigns, with each of the last four games finding additional funding on Kickstarter. The fact that backers have continued to support them over several releases indicates that they're incredibly good at pitching interesting game concepts and ultimately delivering satisfying experiences. Battletech will release on April 24 for PC. View full article

After the completion of the 4th annual Extra Life United event, my family and I are in awe of all the Extra Life community has accomplished. I wanted to write and share this note on behalf of the Enmon family. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Extra Life GAMERS! Somehow these words just do not seem to be adequate enough to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for Extra Life. The amount of money that was raised this year was phenomenal – Eleven million plus is just amazing. We never could have dreamt that “the little girl from Orange, Texas would leave such an amazing legacy”. Our family had such a wonderful time meeting so many new gamers, returning gamers, spectators, and their families at Extra Life United at Children's Hospitals Week. What a year for amazing things to happen - raising eleven million plus dollars in 2017; raising $40,000 at Extra Life United leaving Jeromy Adams speechless on stage, as well as having in attendance a Cow, Fairy, Unicorn, Dinosaur, a bottle of Hot sauce and many illuminating hairstyles! WOW just WOW, all of this and more will be cherished and remembered. As we reminisce about the past years, we cannot help but continue to thank Jeromy Adams and his family for his Dream! What a dream ride it has been and continues to be! We can only imagine what the future will hold for Extra Life and #forthekids. We want to send a great big THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts to Liz, Mike, Lou, Jeromy and staff for planning such a wonderful event. To Tori’s Angels, we say THANK YOU, for providing your expertise to the process and to the event to ensure that it ran smoothly. Our family has discussed the event in great detail and we have an announcement. This year the Enmon Family will be awarding ELU Scholarships to applicants, to help defer some cost of the Extra Life United / Children's Hospitals Week trip in 2019! We hope that by helping in different ways, that perhaps some of the burden will be lifted for those who may otherwise be unable to make it to ELU in 2019. We will keep you posted as details become available. Thank you again for all of the love you continue to give to our family. Hey folks! I am really excited to be bringing Pinball into the mix this year with a pinball tournament on Extra Life play day, November 2nd! This will be my 10th year taking part in Extra LIfe and now that I play pinball primarily, it only felt right to run a pinball event for Extra Life. Location: Pinball Gallery - 81 Lancaster Avenue - Malvern, PA Tournament Overview Tournament Date: November 02, 2019 The first ever Roller Rumble will occur November 2nd, where players will be asked to submit scores across a selection of 4 games from the games available. Players will be allowed to play more than one card but must complete the card they are working on before beginning another. The venue is none other than Pinball Gallery, located in Malvern, PA and will be open to the public if seats are still available for the tournament. With more than 70 games at the location, there will be a nice selection of games included in the tournament, and other games available to be played during any downtime. Price for pre-registration will be $30, which will cover the cost of full-day admittance to Pinball Gallery, entry into the tournament and your first qualifying card. Games will be set to free play, so no coin drop will be required. The top 16 players will then take part in a 1 game, 3 round playoff to determine the winner. Prizes will be rewarded to all players making the playoffs, with the winner earning the Roller Rumble Championship belt, a beautifully built replica belt designed by Undisputed Belts. All profits from the tournament will be donated to the Children's Miracle Network via the Extra Life charity livestream marathon taking place that day. We hope to see you there! If you see this, are in the Philadelphia area, and wish to take part, I will begin accepting pre-registrations soon. Any questions? email habermanstephenATGmail

Hey guys! I wanted to share an idea that one of my guild members did over the past weekend. She contacted one of those painting party places and was able to setup a party that benefited Extra Life! Those seem to be popular activities this year, so I suggest reaching out in your local area. She was able to raise a little bit and is planning on expanding it for next year! So if you aren't sure on how to push the fundraising bar up, think outside the box!!!

Tell us a little about yourself, and how you came to get involved with ExtraLife. We'd love to know what you're playing, and if you're streaming feel free to link your stream and share any tips you have. If you're looking to get more involved with the Philadelphia Guild, keep your eye out for meeting date/time announcements.

You are a saint, sir. All I really want every year are the text files so that I can change how they look to suit my design. So many of the other apps available force design/colour/font choices on me. Edit: I'm sorry but I'm not educated enough to run this application. I downloaded that Node program but it's just a command prompt? I don't understand anything I'm looking at in that zip package. Update: MajorLinux helped me, it turns out I had to use the command prompt in Windows to run this, Notepad to edit in my Extra Life participant ID. It works, thanks again! Update: I also figured out how to edit the file so it spits out team info instead of participant, which was my ultimate goal! Replace user ID with team ID, then edit a couple lines of code so it points to the teams directory instead of the participant directory.

Hello, I am a Senior at Prairie Ridge High School, in the school's capstone Engineering class, Engineering Design and Development (PLTW). My group has chosen to work on a product for people that can't use or have trouble using standard controllers. Our first step in the engineering process is to validate the problem exists. Seeing as Extra Life is such a large organization for the niche we are looking into, we would like your help in getting a simple Google form out to the people this charity benefits. If anyone could share out this form to any gamers that are physically disabled, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Nate Link Link to Google form: https://goo.gl/forms/2TL2egC3kLSHE42O2

Hey guys! I just stumbled across this feature, and I am so happy I did! This will be my sixth year doing a stream and I've been looking for something functional and user friendly; this hit the nail on the head. I'm looking to implement one of the animated gifs that EL provides in their broadcaster kit for whenever someone donate. Can someone give some insight into how I can add this in? I'm sorry if this is a repeat question that someone else asked. It's a rather long thread and I haven't seen it, but if it is already posted and answered, please link me! I can't seem to find it. Thanks!

Thanks for the question and suggestion! RunDisney IS actually utilized by CMN Hospitals > https://www.rundisney.com/princess-half-marathon/. Extra Life works a bit differently, being a fundraising program for CMN Hospitals as opposed to being it's own charity that would qualify for the RunDisney event. Dontnod, the developers of Vampyr and Life Is Strange, released The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit for free just a few days ago. The narrative adventure follows Chris, a young boy who lives with his dad, throughout an afternoon of his life. It has a lot of heart, occasionally channeling the spirit of Calvin & Hobbes, and also quite a bit of darkness. It walks a thin line between the joyful attitudes of youth and the stark realities of adulthood, with all of the trauma and pain that entails. Sit down, kick back, and listen as we parse out the details of this interesting lead up to Life Is Strange 2. A correction: At the end of the episode, there's some mention of this free piece of content being the first episode of Life Is Strange 2 - that is not the case. It's a free prequel to the events of the five episodes that comprise the full game. The first episode of Life Is Strange 2 will release on September 27. The gameplay reveal of The Last of Us Part II was one of the highlights of Sony's entire lineup during E3. It eased into the return to an incredibly savage world with a lovely, human scene set during a wedding being held in a post-apocalyptic world. Ellie, the young girl from the first game who has since become an adult, shares a dance and some words with an unnamed woman with whom she appears to have a romantic history. After exchanging some smile-inducing banter, the two share a kiss. From there, the reveal transitioned to the actual gameplay with Ellie coming up against a group of survivors. She witnesses them execute a man, brutally ripping out his intestines. They then begin combing the area, and we see how the stealth mechanics work. Players are able to sneak through tall grasses and bushes to elude search parties. On top of that, the apocalypse seems to be lousy with abandoned cars. Players will be able to slide under vehicles to hide from enemies. Players who are able to land killing blows with arrows or melee weapons while avoiding detection are rewarded with continued non-detection. One slip-up immediately ratchets up the drama by turning things into an all-out struggle for survival. We see Ellie battling with multiple enemies at once, each one well realized and different - they don't seem like cookie cutter character models. One of the new additions to combat seems to be the ability to disarm adversaries mid-combat and immediately pick up their gear, smoothly transitioning between weapons in a fight with fluid motion. Crafting seems to have been streamlined, as at one point Ellie crafts an explosive arrow on the fly to take out an enemy and serve as a distraction. Oh, and players can still take enemies hostage to use as human shields. One thing that seems obvious from the combat on display: Players will have to move when things get hairy. Limited ammo and melee weapon durability force players to move to different areas to scavenge supplies to continue the fight. Getting backed into a corner could lead to death if you don't have enough gear to stand your ground. Little details really make the violence that much more visceral and real. While sneaking next to a car, Ellie instinctively puts her hand out to steady her crouch and a small sound effect of putting slight pressure on a car hood plays. Injuries that Ellie takes will persist over time. At one point in the fighting, she took an arrow to the chest. The shaft stuck out painfully as she continued to fight, blood slowly staining her shirt, until she was able to take cover behind a counter a minute later and pull out the arrow. Ellie and enemies react naturally to receiving injuries, grabbing the sites of stab wounds and holding wounds as time goes by and they keep moving. Overall, The Last of Us Part II seems to be shaping up to be Naughty Dog's finest and most detailed work to date. Don't forget to sign up for Extra Life to help sick and injured kids in hospitals around the US and Canada by playing games!

Welcome to the June 2018 monthly roundup of events and news for the Extra Life Calgary Guild. Recap of our Neighbour Day BYOBGBBQ (Bring Your Own Board Game BBQ) We had a lot of fun and got to spread the word about Extra Life on June 16th for our BYOBGBBQ. We didn't let a little rain get in the way of some great BBQ and lots of table top games. We even got a surprise visit from the Rooneys from Medicine Hat - it was great to see them! Alex from the ACH also swung by with much-appreciated coffee and timbits. All in all, a really great day! Elijah Wood's company SpectreVision reminded everyone at E3 that their strange VR project Transference still exists and will be releasing later this year. While we didn't know much about it when it debuted in 2017, this year's showing revealed quite a bit about the game Wood described as a darkly twisted psychological thriller. Transference will tell the story of the unfortunate Hayes family whose minds have been linked by an experiment conducted by the father, Raymond Hayes. Players will flit between the three consciousnesses to see the perspective of each family member, but it rapidly becomes apparent that the data, their memories, are corrupted - and there's something else stalking through their minds. The darkly unsettling narrative hopes to achieve a disturbing atmosphere at least in part with its blended use of live-action and digital scenes. That's still not a ton of information to go on, but we will certainly learn more when Transference launches this fall for VR devices (PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive) and the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sans VR.

ELU is always such a fantastic time. Can't wait for next year! And that's absolutely amazing that you're going to help more Extra Lifers get to go! Seriously everyone, if you've never been to ELU, you REALLY need to put it on your list!

The size of the EL community has also grown nearly exponential over the last several years. What if they were to do a trial run with a limited amount of merch and when it's gone it's gone, to "test the waters" again and see if there is enough interest.

What's this??? That's right, the Peterbilt 579 Stand-Up Cabin Extra Life Freight mod. (I'm currently re-working a couple of things for the day-cab.) Simply take the .scs document, and place it in your Documents/American Truck Simulator/mod folder, then enable the mod in the game. elf_pb579_su.scs

Hey everyone! As Siekobilly discovered, I updated the widget to work with OBS. TL;DR; You need a second monitor to use the Helper with OBS. It is incompatible with any plugin that exists for OBS including CLRBrowser. New download and instructions are posted at http://www.breadweb.net/files/extralife/ For those who want to know more about the technical details: The widget was made as a Flash application because it was originally designed for XSplit. Out of the box, XSplit lets you add Flash files to your presentation. Xsplit is an application that can load and run Flash files. The current best way to add web or Flash content to OBS is to use the CLRBrowser plugin. Unfortunately, this plugin uses a browser to render web and Flash content. When running in a browser, Flash files are subject to the Flash player's security restrictions around cross-domain data loading. The Flash application actually loads ExtraLife website pages and parses them to determine your individual donations as they come in. That way it knows when you have a new donation and it can total them up. This counts as loading data from another domain and is why it won't work when running in a browser. ExtraLife could fix this by adding a crossdomain.xml policy file to the root of their website. I've reached out to them and asked them to do this and also suggested they get to work on a formal API so myself and other people wouldn't have to resort to parsing HTML pages which is no fun. The ExtraLife team reached out to me because they were interested in the widget so hopefully we can work together to create a set of developer tools and a nice API in the future! I could write my own plugin for OBS which would render the Flash widget without using a browser, but that will take time. For now, I created an executable that loads the Flash file and displays it in a window. That way you can load the Flash widget into your presentation via a Window Source. The catch to this is that most of us play our games fullscreen. If the window is covered, it won't be captured correctly. The only way to get around this is by putting the window on a 2nd monitor. I'm personally using OBS tomorrow and that's how I'm getting the widget in my presentation. If you think I missed anything obvious that would not require a 2nd monitor, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope it works out for most everyone. Good luck with your fundraising!
