Planning for Game Day

Recommended Posts

Alright, as mentioned in the meeting minutes, we are getting close to the big show, and we have lots of planning to do to get us there.

Planning:

Create Google docs with supplies listed

Create promotional material

Create rules and conduct policies, such as no alcohol, doors close at 10, limit adult language and content until when appropriate

Miracle family attending?

Activities:

Most funds raised at end of event wins a Nintendo 360

Retro Hour, possible classic game tournament for a prize

Fighting game hour, smash brothers tournament for a prize

Racing games, possible ongoing challenge, fastest lap time gets a prize, Mario cart tournament

Dancing games

Reset top scores on arcade machines, high score gets a prize

Bingo

Minecraft server

Please post any other ideas for activities through out the day, or ideas to flesh out the existing ideas into something more concrete.  Jimmy, do you want to use the calendar account to set up that google doc?

I'll get the ball rolling with retro hour. I figure this one should go early in the line up. As far as setting the scene, Alecia suggested some oldies game music. Mario comes to mind. I sort of think we should have video game music in the background most of the time. It is upbeat, and humble bundle has given us plenty over the years. Alecia also mentioned a themed snack, Pac man cookies would be super easy. Specific events during this time, only thing I can think of is super mario speed runs or the like. Super Mario can be beat in under 5 minutes, so it wouldn't take a ton of time. Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk

Fighting game hour

I think we are using hour here with a loose definition.  I think a smash tournament will take longer than that.  Probably want to have a sign up sheet, and accept the first X people that want in.  If we do 4 player matches, and the top person goes up to the next level, we could take a lot, maybe 32.  I think that is harsh though, so maybe do 16 and the top 2 advance?  Stock or Time rounds, doesn't mater.  We need to be sure someone has all the characters unlocked or someone will get grumpy.  I don't own the newest one, yet.    Has to be random map I would guess.

Any thoughts for good music?  I think some of the street fighter music is pretty identifiable as street fighter.  I googled for some stuff, and tons of great ones out there, but we should probably aim for something that people will recognize the game is came from.

Thats all I have on this one.

Oh, and each of these tournaments needs to have a MC.  Someone making color commentary, getting people signed up, shouting out names to get people set.

And a secondary question, can guild members win prizes?  I feel like that is a thing that organizations normally don't allow.

I do MCing out at the casino so I don't have a problem talking on a mic in front of people or I can just project really loud.  I may not be well versed with all the games but I can wing it and keep it fun.

I imagine we can share the duty between different events.  I'm sure you don't want to be stuck working during each "event".

Alright, Racing games.  Lets see, mario kart is the no brainer.  Whatever setup we choose to do for the smash tournament, I feel we can probably just copy and paste to a kart tournament.  Jimmy also mentioned an ongoing throughout the day "Fastest lap on rainbow road", which I love the idea of.  Combine the need for speed with no walls and a silly course layout?  Frustration, anger and hilarity will ensue.

On the tabletop side, there is a game called Formula D which was featured on Wil Wheaton's "Tabletop".  I think someone I know has a copy.

Music: It looks like Gran Turismo is known for having some pretty good soundtracks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_the_Gran_Turismo_series

FYI, this is Wes. I have all DLC characters for the Wii U Smash, as well as Mario Kart 8. And there are a few different rule variations people use for Smash tournaments, depending on how elitist you want to be. For retro stuff, I have a lot of old consoles, as well as some stuff on the virtual console and collection discs, so if you let me know what series you want, I can probably hook you up. As for music, try checking out OCRemix.

As it stands now, I have the day requested off and my boss tends to be pretty flexible, but on the off chance I can't make it or am delayed, I can pass along equipment to someone in advance.

Awesome, Wes.

Okay, Dancing game.  Honestly, not only is this not my thing, I didn't even realize it was still a thing at all.  That being said, I have done my only DDRing of my life at an extra life event 3 years ago, and it did a good job of lifting my energy and getting me going again in the late night.  That's why I suggest we put something like this fairly late into the night.  Plus, this will take up some space I guess, which putting it later in the night will give us more room for it.  What is the current DDR and how can we make a competition of it?  I guess either a one v one single elimination tournament, or just highest score on a particular game/song?

Music: sort of self supplied on this one I feel.

sorry for taking so long to respond and if any of this was already mentioned(not gonna lie, didnt read the other posts):

in terms of the "hourly" events, we may not limit ourselves to just an hour.  Pending upon the size of the crowd and event, 1 hour can go by rather quickly.  Using Smash as an example, try watching one online, even a fairly small 2min time battle tourney can take longer than you realize.  Plus, dont forget...we have 24 hours here to use.  We should also try to (if Jimmy, Ben, Ryan, whoever) hasn't already, plan out ahead of time what events will be when(going back to "we have 24 hours" spacing of the time between events should be considered) and where.  By "where" i mean it wouldnt be a bad idea to say take 1 or 2(pending need) spots and say "these tv's right here are for guild events specifically" so when its time for the Smash tourney, mario kart event, etc. people know where they are going.   Along with this, if i recall, someone mentioned at meeting about bringing snack/beverage items(bottled water, keurieg, etc.) aditional tables/chairs, figuring out a designated area for that stuff ahead of time might be a good idea as well, perhaps have someone draw a rough layout of the store and plan that stuff out.   In terms of the events themselves and the brackets, maybe consider setting up multiple different ones depending on the interest so that way if overly low or high you dont have to scramble to change the one already designed Or possibly more than 1 style of match, say one is the more "pro" style no items final destination, and the other is all items/random stage.  Another idea may be to once everything is decided on, have some kind of big whiteboard or poster or something with all the times and everything on it so when people come in they can see whats going on when.

In terms of music and such, aside from the noises of people and their games on the tvs, I'm not certain music (via boom box or whatever) will be necessary. I personally used headphones the entire time (on consoles and my pc) and paid no attention to the music supplied by the venue. Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk

I am also fine with that. Might be a lit easier without. Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk

Busy life is busy.  Sorry guys, I'm late to the party here.  I read through the comments and I think we have a solid start.  I don't think we need a ton of events, because I agree with Jon that some of these things will be multi-hour events.  Here's what I've got so far from the schedule, etc:

10:00am: Retro Game Time - Kick off with the announcement of the high-score challenge for a TBD arcade game.  We will need to work out details with Play and Trade to determine if we can get donations from the money that will go into the machine, and also if the high scores can be cleared.  If the scores cannot be cleared, then we will need to keep track.  Winner gets a TBD prize.  I'm thinking the prizes should somehow reflect the contest that is won, however, Ryan has pointed out that we should get rid of the X360s ASAP.

1:00pm - Racing Game Time - Kicked off with the Mario Kart 8 Tournament.  Winner gets a TBD prize (X360?  Copy of Mario Kart 8?).

8:00pm - Fighting Game Time - Kick off with Smash Bros Tournament.  Winner gets a TBD prize (X360?  Copy of Smash Bros?)

2:00am - Home Stretch Dance/Music Time - Have an area set up for Just Dance, DDR, Party Central.  Maybe have a Guitar Hero tournament?  Winner wins a prize, and all that?  We could give away a pre-order of Guitar Hero Live?

I think we could use one or two more tournaments/events, but I also think a lot of people will want to just stick to their own games.  Having the Minecraft Server available, maybe a Bingo game or two sprinkled throughout, stuff like that...I think will be plenty.

I think that looks good, I know I'll be playing and MMO a good chunk of the day.  If we need retro games I have a box of Atari games, Asteroid, Pac-Man, Empire Strikes Back, Centipede, Super Breakout, etc come to mind for a high score challenge.

My hands and wrists are already aching. Maybe it's time to dust off the plastic controller and practice ;-)

Talked to my parents and it looks like they have two folding tables we can use, one the basic card table size and another rectangular, slightly longer one, assuming we still need some. For the Smash Bros tournament, I figured Gamecube controllers could be the standard control scheme, since that's what most people are used to. However, I'm not sure how many of mine still work, so can I count on Play and Trade having enough there or should I ask around about borrowing a handful? And last but not least, I have a few people who think they can get off that day and were asking if we needed any help. I suggested that they could at least sign up officially for the event, but if we need anymore hands, I should be able to ask.

Tables are welcome but we might not need many more. I'd say GC controllers are probably best. Play and Trade might have some. We can check with them. Bring as many friends as you can :-P Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
