Kirby Animation Collab Has to Be Seen to Be Believed

Jack Gardner

If you're a fan of Kirby or off-the-wall animation, you need to do yourself a favor and check out Kirby Reanimated Collab, a grassroots fan animation project centered on the titular pink puffball. Headed by illustrator and animator Roya Shahidi, the project coordinated with over three hundred animators to recreate an episode of the Kirby Right Back at Ya! anime.

The episode of Kirby Right Back at Ya! the collaboration focuses its reanimation efforts on is Episode 49 "Cartoon Buffoon" which fittingly tells the story of King DeDeDe trying to animate his own television show. Seeing the events of the show unfold in hundreds of different art styles and perspectives on the material is absolutely fascinating. At one point a scene plays out entirely in paper cutouts, another takes place using stop motion miniatures, and the variations in 2D (and occasional 3D) styles simply dazzles the viewer. It's, simply put, amazing.

The non-profit project is free for everyone and a fun fan send-up to the beloved Kirby franchise. Thankfully, it has not been hit with a cease and desist from Nintendo, like many gaming projects have been in the past. You can check out the full credit list of the video on this Google Doc spreadsheet that lists almost 350 contributors to the project.
