  6. Thank you so very much to our wonderful volunteers who helped to staff this event! Our team for the weekend was @Ceraph1216, @NodnarbDude, @Taco_Girl, @LittleSith and myself. Our final results for the two days were 13 unique new Extra-Life sign-ups! Several of these sign ups were for Baltimore, but there was a surprisingly wide travel area among competitors in the event (including someone from Brazil). We had approximately .6 sign-ups per hour for each hour our table/booth was open at the event. Since on average each sign up results in $100 raised, we can approximate that our efforts this weekend raised $1300 for Extra Life, approximately $200 of which was for our local hospital. The top five traffic hours were 9 AM - 12 PM, 1 PM - 3 PM, and 6 PM - 7 PM. There were too many no traffic hours to justify a worst 5 hours list, however it is safe to say that the second day's traffic of the event did not warrant our presence. The low sample size may mean that the traffic information is not externally valid for similar events. If we do other events with SCG, we may seek to only attend on the first day; however, it may be worth doing at least one other event, possibly in the DC market, with both days just to see if this result will be reproduced. Despite relatively unimpressive sign-ups below a goal of 24 sign ups or approximately 2% of the total attendees, this was enormously successful for the "brand" of Extra Life. We put our name out there, built some relationships, and gave out a TON of brochures to people who were afraid to commit. The few people we did sign up were highly engaged and wanted to take Extra Life back to their play groups and game shops to get others to join them. I personally did some networking that could be very beneficial locally and may even result in some good things happening on a regional level. It was absolutely worth attending, and I hope that Star City Games will allow us to attend some of their other upcoming events. Strategies used for this event: short display loop tablet app sign up loose giveaways (no win/participation needed) Positives: plenty of space targeted audience power location was good for visual exposure staff announcer mentioned us during presentation Opportunites: overall foot traffic candy was not effective at all and did not interest this crowd, and most of it went to BCC and security staffer who pocketed handfuls at a time Volunteer Feedback from Post-Event Survey: shift length ok, but perhaps a little long most volunteers found interactions between volunteers or with attendees enjoyable level of engagement from attendees was very good should not staff second day in the future strategies aside from human interaction and tablet use were not especially effective we need a new way to drive traffic to the table at this sort of event, but it can't be disruptive most volunteers felt we were effective as a team most volunteers felt that it is worthwhile to work with SCG or similar events again it was beneficial to speak with people that may not have otherwise heard of us You are all welcome to add any comments you have in response, and thank you again for helping to support this event! I believe it will be slow going with tabletop and trading card events for a while, but our sustained efforts could have a big impact on Extra Life as a whole, not just our local hospital!
  7. Open Play Weekend - Star City Games

    until
COVERAGE This is our first time at a major Magic the Gathering event, and we're very lucky to have the support of an industry giant like Star City Games! Final details for this event will be developing this week. Please RSVP on this page if you intend to help, and comment with which times you are available. Further instructions will be provided throughout the week, and if you intend to volunteer and @Sarah doesn't already have your cell phone number, please PM it to her to coordinate badge/ID transfer. All volunteers will be provided with a laminated Extra Life Baltimore Guild 2017 ID Badge. This alone will not get you into events, but will help identify you as part of our group. You may keep your ID badge and lanyard to reuse at future events. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE BADGES PROVIDED BY THE EVENT HOME UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED, as these badges may be shared among volunteers.. We are in need of volunteer coverage for the following windows: Saturday 7:30 am - 10:00 am includes setup, this shift is tentative and my begin earlier @Ceraph1216 (partial coverage for setup) 7:30 am - 8 pm includes setup and breakdown, end time is tentative and may leave earlier @Sarah 9:30 am - 1:30 pm @NodnarbDude 1 pm - 8 pm includes breakdown, end time is tentative and may leave earlier @Taco_Girl Sunday 7:30 am - 2:30 pm includes setup @Ceraph1216 10 am - 3 pm @LittleSith 12 pm - 7 pm @NodnarbDude 1 pm - 8 pm includes breakdown, end time is tentative and may leave earlier @Sarah PARKING Please plan on parking 1 hour prior to your volunteering shift. Traffic in the city gets heavy in the late morning. It may be harder to find unoccupied spaces in garages if the weather is nice. Please reference Google Maps to assist you in locating a parking garage close to the convention center. The Sheraton parking garage is most convenient and obvious as you turn in on Conway (not marked on this Maps search), however it fills up very quickly. Google Map of Parking Garages close to the Baltimore Convention Center Volunteers who will be driving to the convention will incur parking expenses. These parking expenses will not be reimbursed, however they can be written off at your end-of-year tax return as volunteer expenses. Please be sure to request a receipt if you use cash-paid event parking. Retain a copy of your receipts for your tax records. PUBLIC TRANSIT The Baltimore Convention Center has it's own light rail stop with service from the Red, Yellow, and Blue lines. MARC Trains run into Baltimore from more distant county departure points, and stop nearest to the Baltimore Convention Center at Camden Yards, which is a comfortable walking distance of several blocks. For further information about using public transit, please visit the Maryland Transit Authority website at https://mta.maryland.gov/. If choosing the Light Rail, it is suggested that you purchase a day pass. You can also message @NodnarbDude with public transit questions. IF YOU INTEND TO USE PUBLIC TRANSIT, PLEASE BE AWARE OF HOURS OF SERVICE BEFORE COMMITTING TO A SHIFT. Volunteers who will be taking buses or trains to the convention will incur transit expenses. These transit expenses will not be reimbursed, however they can be written off at your end-of-year tax return as volunteer expenses. Retain a copy of your receipts for your tax records. EXPLORING THE EVENT OR PARTICIPATION IN OPEN PLAY Before or after your volunteer shift, if your badge does not need to be handed off to another volunteer, you are welcome to explore the event. All provided event badges MUST be turned in to @Sarah, @Ceraph1216, or @NodnarbDude before leaving the Baltimore Convention Center. Badge hand-offs will be coordinated via group text message. If you participate in gameplay, please be sure to remove/conceal your Extra Life name badge. Before, during, and after your shift — especially every minute that you wear your event badge — you are representing Extra Life, Johns Hopkins Children's Center, and the Extra Life Baltimore Guild. Star City Games has generously waived their vendor fees for us in order to make it possible for us to attend and volunteer at this event. It is very important that we maintain a great relationship with the staff at Star City Games so that we can attend their future events. Remember, you are representing a children's charity. If you aren't sure whether or not a particular behavior is appropriate, please check with @Sarah. LUNCHES AND POTTY BREAKS If you need to take a quick bathroom break and you do not have backup coverage at the booth, please take any loose valuable items with you (i.e. laptops, tablets, cell phones). There will be a small lock box available in our booth as well. There are bathrooms conveniently located in the exhibition hall. If you have backup coverage at the booth and need to leave to get food or take a bathroom break, please be courteous and let the other volunteer know that you are leaving the table. Any food you may be able to purchase will be overpriced convention center food. It costs a lot, and doesn't taste great. It is strongly suggested to pack a lunch, snacks, and beverages if possible. SIGNING UP TO VOLUNTEER Please let us know when you can volunteer. I will update the event with confirmed volunteer names below the shifts they have agreed to work. We need one volunteer minimum per shift to start off with, however extra coverage during periods would be appreciated as this is a new event and we're not sure what to expect. For additional details, please message @Sarah, @NodnarbDude or @Ceraph1216. Volunteers will receive ongoing updates and instructions throughout the week and during the event. Thanks so very much for donating your time and energy for the kids! 8. GOW4 Cross Play Tournament - 4.22

Hey guys! We are having a Gears of War 4 Cross Play Tournament at the Salem Microsoft Store on the 22nd. We are super excited about it as it's not something we've done before. I wanted to invite everyone and also ask if any guildies would be interested in manning an Extra Life table at the event? https://aka.ms/gow4crossplay
  9. Hey all! I love to play competitive video games such as League of Legends, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, CS:GO, and so forth. I'm ranked pretty high in each game and was looking to see if we could start up an ExtraLife themed team where we could compete either in local events, or online events, and call it ExtraLife. It would probably gain some notoriety with the scene, and cause gamers to search for what ExtraLife is and such. And if we attended the same type of lan events, I'm sure people would sign up once they meet us. I'm a local around Philadelphia, PA and would love to even get some online events going. Here are a list of the games I play, and a way to contact me: 1. League of Legends - Diamond 4 Support / Top Main 2. Overwatch - Master Tier - Season 3 Ended 3800 MR, Season 4 is currently 3650. 3. Hearthstone - I normally end up around Rank 2-3, but I know there are a lot of tournaments held online for points. 4. CS:GO - Haven't played in a year or two, I was LEM before I stopped. If I had a team I could get back into it for Extra Life 5. Heroes of the Storm - Just started but I am well versatile in MOBAs and am trying to get to ranked now. 6. I also play Smash Brothers Melee in tournaments from time to time. You can contact me on: Battlenet - Clementine#11594 Steam ID - I'll modify this when I get home and get it You can always drop me a message on the forums as well. This is just an idea I had, If anyone is interested in getting a following together, it would be great and super fun! We could even stream our tournament matches, make some vods and get some publicity out there in the gaming world!
  10. It is a good time to be a Halo fan. The Master Chief Collection is heading to Xbox One next month and Microsoft is launching the hype machine with today's announcements. The 65GB Halo: Master Chief Collection hits store shelves on November 11, a release that it shares with the first episode of Halo: Nightfall, a live-action series overseen by executive producer Ridley Scott and directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (best known for his work directing several episodes of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries). Nightfall is intended to connect Halo 4 with Halo 5: Guardians as well as introduce Agent Locke, a secondary playable character who will appear in Guardians. On top of slick, new Nightfall footage, Microsoft announced HaloFest, an event celebrating all things Halo. It will be held on November 10 in Los Angeles. If you are the world's biggest Halo fan and can't make it, don't fret, you can tune into a livestream of the event. HaloFest will include an early look at a beta build of Halo 5: Guardians, the premier of Halo: Nightfall, and interviews with members of 343 Industries' development team. On November 8-9, Microsoft will also be hosting a Halo tournament where 32 pro-gamers will compete in Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer for $50,000 in prizes. You'll be able to watch a livestream of that tournament, too!
  11. The Red Bull Training Grounds Begin Today

Today marks the beginning of the Red Bull Training Grounds, a three day intensive training period and tournament for professional StarCraft II players from around the world. With $10,000 in prizes on the line, which of the eight world renowned RTS masters will emerge victorious? At this Red Bull Training Grounds, fans will be able to see: NesTea, SeleCT, Succeed, Illusion, State, Snute, and Huk go toe-to-toe in the fast-paced, real-time strategy arena. For the low price of $0, you can watch the livestream over the weekend or view the event at the Full Sail Live venue which is at the address you see below: 3300 University Blvd Winter Park, FL 32792 Doors open at 1 PM EST for the live event while the livestream begins at 2 PM EST Friday through Sunday. You can find the stream over on the Red Bull Training Grounds hub as well as some great Q&A interviews with the eSports competitors. I'll be rooting for SeleCT, who will you be cheering on?
  12. Beginning Friday morning and running through Sunday evening, the annual EVO championship series (short for Evolution) will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. EVO is an umbrella event that covers all of the major and some of the not-so-major fighting games, giving each game its own tournament or exhibition. This year, EVO will consist of nine sub-tournaments, one for each of the following: Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat, Persona 4 Arena, Street Fighter x Tekken ver. 2013, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, The King of Fighters XIII, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. In addition to all of these games, there will also be exhibitions for indie fighting games Divekick and Skullgirls, as well as a demonstration of the upcoming box One fighting game, Killer Instinct. As someone who has very little experience with fighting games, I still find EVO to be a blast to watch. While I might not know the ins and outs of the gameplay and some of the nuances certainly go over my head, I know can still appreciate moments like my favorite video game comeback of all time from a 2005 Street Fighter EVO tournament between Daigo Umehara, who is widely considered to be the greatest Street Fighter player of all time, and Justin Wong, another contender for the position. There will be three streams via Twitch bringing EVO’s content to you live on the srkevo1, srkevo2, and srkevo3 channels. Viewers will be able to switch between the three of them from Twitch’s EVO 2013 hub. Each stream will have two commentators who know the intricacies of the games and will be able to translate for viewers who aren’t as familiar with fighting games. While the main streams are free, it is possible to purchase a $12 HD ticket to view the streams in HD. All proceeds will go toward a scholarship fund at NYU Game Center for aspiring game makers within the fighting game community. There was some contention yesterday, when Nintendo announced that they would not allow Super Smash Bros. Melee to be streamed from the competition, despite a fan movement that raised $94,000 for charity in order to bring Melee to the venerable EVO event. After about five hours of massive outrage, Nintendo reversed its stance, allowing the fighting game to be streamed. The full streaming schedule for EVO 2013 can be found here. For a more in-depth look at EVO including players to watch and fighting game jargon, be sure to check out this excellent viewing guide over on Shoryuken. Below you can find my favorite match-up from EVO 2012. For any of you fighting game fans out there, who are you rooting for this EVO? Personally, I’m hoping to see Daigo sweep Street Fighter IV.
  13. The ELTS is back at it again and this time we're playing Rocket League. To include consoles into the mix, we will be playing Rocket League for XBone/PC. We will be doing Round Robin to declare winners. This time, instead of only guilds, any Extra Life participants can sign up. If you want to put together your own team with friends, have at it! I wasn't too happy with the other site for registering events and what not, so I decided to use old faithful, Challonge for bracket creation and tracking! Click Here For More Info and Registration! Also, I had issues with Battlefy's functionality so I decided I'll be switching to good ol' Challonge for brackets and teams.
